We've all been there - you're on the go with hours to spare until your next full meal when you suddenly feel hunger pangs come on with a vengeance. Although it may be tempting to run to the nearest drive through, you know you can't do that daily. But what snacks can you count on every day to get you through in good health? RedPlum asked registered dietitian Christina Baudis to offer up ideas for healthy snacks that are perfect for a grab-and-go lifestyle.

"Snacking protein-rich foods between meals can not only help to stave off hunger, but also keeps energy levels up", says Baudis. "Snacking also makes it easier to avoid the urge to overeat during other times of the day. The key is to opt for healthy snacks instead of junk food and avoid things high in sugar and saturated fat", she says. "Specifically, look for snacks that include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts & seeds or low fat dairy products."

The next time you're looking for something to bring hunger to a halt, Baudis suggests reaching for one of these healthy snacks:

1. Popcorn High in protein, fiber and vitamin B, popcorn is a filling whole-grain snack. For a healthy on the go treat, pop a mini bag of salt and butter free popcorn before leaving the house.

2. Dried Fruit Strawberries, apples, bananas and pears - dried fruit comes in all shapes and sizes and is a perfect snack to enjoy on the go. With an ideal mix of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, a handful will help you to feel full, but without the caloric guilt!

3. Carrots Known for their vision-promoting qualities, carrots contain lots of beneficial vitamins and nutrients. Divvy up a bag of peeled baby carrots into smaller plastic baggies. A perfect snack-sized portion consists of 7 or 8 carrots.

4. Trail Mix This classic snack is not just for hikers. With a blend of nuts, seeds, grains and fruit, trail mix is packed with protein which will keep you feeling fuller, longer. "Opt for varieties that don't include chocolate and be wary of eating trail mix in large quantities, because nuts are high in calories. A handful is a good snack-sized serving", says Baudis.

5. Low Fat String Cheese String cheese isn't just for kids anymore! A good source of calcium and protein, one stick of low-fat string cheese makes a great snack for an adult on the go.
