1.) House Hunters:
This 30-minute program showcases home buyers in search of a new residence. The house hunters are shown three homes and pick the one they like best. As the realtor leads the home buyers through the homes in the buyers' price range, the buyers weigh the pros and cons of each dwelling. You can play along at home and try to figure out which house they picked. This is a great show to get ideas of what buyers are looking for in their next home. Many of the house hunters look for open layouts, large kitchens with granite countertops & stainless steel appliances, and lots of closet space.
Why it made the top 5: This entertaining home improvement show made the top five due its entertaining 'armchair quaterback/play-along-at-home' style and its variety of locations/price ranges. You may find House Hunters very helpful if you are remodeling your home for an upcoming move.
House Hunters airs on HGTV
2.) Man Land:
This 30-minute home improvement program showcases some of the best "man caves" known to, well, MAN! See how a sports lover turned the basement into a full blown sports bar! One other fella turned his backyard into a pirate-themed oasis! The show's host, Greg Gray, interviews the wives of these clever gentlemen to get their thoughts on man-themed remodeling project. While these ideas shown are very costly and extreme, it's a great way to generate ideas for your very own "man cave."
Why it made the top 5: Man Land placed on the top five home improvement show due to its obnoxious, out-there design ideas that can be scaled down to connect with the average home owner.
Man Land airs on HGTV.
3.) HGTV's Design Star:
This reality competition show features 10 designers hoping to win their very own show on HGTV. The home interior designers face off in different design challenges hoping to impress a panel of judges. Even if you're not a fan of the traditional reality show with its bickering contestants and forced drama, you might enjoy Design Star.
Why it made the top 5: This show focuses less on the drama and more on the actual designs. Contestants on HGTV's Design Star are very creative and innovative and you can pick up some useful tips & new ideas when watching this show, earning it a place on my top 5 home improvement show list.
HGTV's Design Star airs on HGTV.
4.) Curb Appeal:
HGTV's Curb Appeal focuses on the landscaping element of home improvement. Each episode shows a desperate home owner having major landscaping issues. HGTV's team of experts burst in, giving the lucky home owner an outdoor makeover, transforming the dull abode into an up-to-date, magazine-quality masterpiece.
Why it made the top 5: It's a great show to learn how much difference a trimmed shrub, a few potted plants, and flagstone path can make to the outward appearance of your home. After watching just one episode, you'll walk away with more than a few ideas to make the most of your outdoor space!
5.) Home Improvement:
A top 5 home improvement television show list isn't complete without the '90s sitcom Home Improvement. Tim Allen stars as Tim "The Toolman" Taylor, a family man with 3 wisecracking boys and host of a local home improvement television show, "Tool Time."
Because Tim and his sidekick Al couldn't get through filming a segment of Tool Time before something went amiss, this is a great show to watch when your very own weekend project turns into a disaster! Having trouble hooking up the new dishwasher? Well, Tim did it worse! Pay attention to the Tool Time segment closely and you'll pick up a few useful tips as well as some laughs (of course)!
Why it made the top 5: It's a classic! Lots of running gags (Wilson's face never being shown, Al always decked out in flannel, and so on), great slapstick comedy, interesting family issues, and even the occasional home improvement tip earn this a classic "home improvement" show a spot on my top 5 home improvement shows!
Home Improvement currently airs in reruns on Nick at Night.
