International Film Festivals are annual events showcasing films from around the globe. Screenings of those films take place around the particular area's theaters. Here is a brief guide to 5 of the top International Film Festivals.

Sundance Film Festival

Park City, Utah

January 21 - 31, 2010

The Sundance Film Festival is the largest Independent Cinema film festival in the United States. It's held every January in Utah. In 1985, Sundance Institute took over management of the United States Film Festival and renamed it the Sundance Film Festival. There are over 9,000 submissions of drama, documentary, and short films to the Festival each year and only 200 are selected to be showcased. This event attracts over 50,000 people to Utah for the 10-day festival. Events during the Sundance Festival include the film screenings, meet and greet with film makers and the public, plus parties and bands. CANNES

May 12 - 23, 2010

Cannes is French for "le Festival de Cannes". It is one of the world's oldest film festivals held each Spring at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres in Cannes, France. In the Cannes festival there are several divisions of competition, each one representing a different genre or style. Jurors are chosen prior to the Festival who will decide the winning films. Again, there are many awards to be given, depending on the film's category. The biggest award is the Palme d'Or, meaning "Golden Palm", for the overall best film. Part of the Cannes Festival is the Marche de Film where thousands of film makers, buyers, producers, etc. negotiate partnerships and business deals. Another part of the Cannes Festival is the Cinefondation, which gives young film makers all over the world support in their endeavors. Each year 10 to 15 brief films from over 1,000 students are selected for exhibition.

Toronto International Film Festival

September 10 - 19, 2009

The Toronto International Film Festival was founded in 1976 and is, as its official website says, among the top prestigious film festivals in the world. TIFF is held every September in Toronto. Over 300,000 people attend this events screenings of a little over 300 films. Individual tickets to each screening is $19.76. There are a few awards given out during the Toronto International Film Festival. Some of TIFF's previous years award winners which you may know are Slumdog Millionaire, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and American Beauty to name a few.

Rotterdam

January 27- February 1, 2010

The International Film Festival Rotterdam is held each January in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It is one of the largest film festivals in Europe and rumored to be the most friendly. Over 3,000 film industry businessmen attend CineMart with international film makers during the Festival to do negotiations. (CineMart is the largest co-production market for film projects.) Individual tickets can be bought by the general public online or at the box office.

Berlin International Film Festival
February 11 - 21, 2010

The Berlin International Film Festival is also known as Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin in German or simply Berlinale. It was founded in 1951 and is held, as its name implies, in Berlin, Germany. About 400 films are shown during the Berlinale. Film makers compete for awards called Silver, Golden, and Crystal Bears, but there are a few other awards like an Audience Award and Teddy Award. You can read more about the awards and judging here.

The European Film Market is also a big part of the event between buyers, film makers, producers, etc. There's also an event during the festival called the Berlinale Talent Campus. That is a week long session of workshops for young international filmmakers. Tickets to the Berlin International Film Festival screenings can be purchased at the ticket box or online.
