Top 5 IPod Touch Apps

Tammy Forner
The iPod touch is a significant modern day invention. But the iPod touch would not be as important to those die hard Apple users if it were not for all the many iPod touch apps. New as well as existing companies are competing for a piece of this ever expanding Apple market. There is money to be made with these iPod touch apps. The possibilities for new itouch apps are endless. New and creative apps will continue to be the focus as companies attempt to stay relevant in this changing market. The beneficiaries of this new and ever changing Apple technology are the many iPhone and iPod touch app fans waiting for the next new app.

ALthough I do not have a need for an iPhone I do own and would not be without my iPod touch. As an iPod touch user I am always on the look out for new iPod touch apps that are useful or just plain fun to use. I originally started out with only 8 GB, but soon realized with all the apps and videos that it was not enough memory. Having got what I like to call my itouch 32gb I can now load apps till my heart is content. I like trying many different types of apps and although some may not be all that new to the apps market they are new and useful to this iPod touch user. The top 5 new iPod touch apps to me that may be either useful or fun to try are as follows:

1. Byline - As an avid blog reader this has recently become one of my most used apps. Byline allows subscribers of RSS feeds through their Google Reader account to be categorized into folders of their choosing. These RSS feeds are stored on the iPod touch so that even if there is no internet connection they still can be read. For an iPod touch rather than an iPhone user this feature alone is worth the price for this app since a WIFI internet connection isn't always possible. To control the amount of content that is being stored once the post is read it is automatically deleted unless it is starred in which case the Byline user can reread the information at a later date.

2. Kindle - The Kindle iPod touch app is a great find for those who love to read and want to save money at the same time. The Amazon Kindle app is free and will save users from spending money on Amazon's Kindle unit which is over $300. But even if you were not planning to buy a Kindle there is still the savings on the books themselves. Most of the books I have on Kindle have been free. The only book I have paid for was on sale for $1. Even if the books are New York Times Bestsellers they are still much cheaper than buying them in the store.

3. Files Lite - This app is free and allows a user to transfer up to 200 MB of material over a WIFI connection. The process is fairly easy since the app provides simple directions for copying items to it thus allowing an iPhone or iPod touch user to carry documents, photos, movies etc with them. I have used it successfully to carry e-books and other such written material with me that I need for easy access.

3. AP News - The AP News app is for those who enjoy to keep up with the news. This app is also free and provides current news in categories of the users choosing such as world news, political, technology, business and even unusual news stories the AP app refers to as "Wacky". The nice thing about this app is the local news feature which is helpful since I do not subscribe to my local newspaper.

4. I.TV - This iPod touch app is one that does double duty and is one I use everyday. It is a guide for all the television shows that are on every hour with show descriptions. A user first enters in the type of television system they use such as only local channels or dish for example and then it brings up all the available channels. Out of all the channel possibilities a user can then create a list of only their favorite channels for faster look up of show times. This iPhone and iPod touch app also has new movie reviews and a section for recaps of some of the favorite shows if they are missed. A user that has TiVo can also link to this app to choose which shows to record. A great iphone app for the price....free.

5. iFirstAid Lite and iFirstAid - Both these iPod touch apps are free and provide a lay person with basic first aid info. I have both of them and think together they both provide a clear picture for a beginner on basic CPR and how to take care of cuts and burns. Even for a person who has been through first aid and CPR training these iPod touch apps will help be a reminder.
