Top 5 ITunes Songs Played on My Desktop

Jesse Schmitt

So I've been using iTunes on my desktop for a while now. I don't always listen to music when I'm working but I do often enough. Particularly when I'm somewhere like I am right now; the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue in midtown. It's the library but there is enough going on around me that having the music is helpful.

I pulled up iTunes on my desktop and figured I would see what in my 4000 song collection were my most listened to songs. In a few cases I must say that I was surprised. I like these songs I just didn't realize I'd gone on such a bender on some of these particular tunes.

5) Blue Ridge Mountains - Fleet Foxes: Fleet Foxes are a newish band that I really enjoy. Their folksy, bluesy, almost gospel like delivery on some of their tunes makes them a repeat listener for me on my desktop. As of right now I've listened to their song "Blue Ridge Mountains" 33 times on my desktop. I've listened to this song plenty on my iPod as well.

4) Crazy - Gnarls Barkley: Here's kind of a shocker; Gnarls Barkley. I like Danger Mouse and I like Cee-Lo Green but this collaboration was kind of genius. The songs repetitive, the beats thumping, and the hooks got me listening again and again. "Crazy" checks in with 34 listens at present.

3) She Cries Your Name - Beth Orton: I love Beth Orton. I did not really know who this haunting voice was when I still had CD's only. I had her on a couple of CMJ CD's from the late 90's and had always enjoyed her when I had those discs in. But with the comeuppance of digital music and my acute critical ear, as well as her inclusion in my iTunes library, I have indulged. "She Cries Your Name" has gotten 61 plays on my iTunes desktop library at present.

2) Leeds - Indigo Girls: Here's another shocker. I love the Indigo Girls and there are many whole CD's who's numbers would blow this tiny iTunes list out of the water. I just didn't realize how many times I'd listened to "Leeds." It's a very haunting piano ballad and is a quite lovely song. "Leeds" has 61 listens on my iTunes desktop at present.

1) So Long, Marianne - Leonard Cohen: "Come over to the window little darling; I'd like to try to read your palm." I guess at the end of the day I am just a displaced hippie folkster who needs to be back in 1972. I'm sure those who knew me would I agree that I too, am "...some kind of gypsy boy." I love this song and Leonard Cohen is one of those artists who always put everything out there for listeners to accept or reject; even if he's speaking in coded language. Sevens are the number of Leonard Cohen as I've listened to this song 77 times on my iTunes desktop.

I've included links to YouTube videos for the songs (including a very moving live version of "Leeds") folks interested in hearing what I hear on my desktop.
