5. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street
Here Depp plays the role of the demon barber of Fleet street, Sweeney Todd. I believe this was his first musical and just seeing Johnny belt it was exciting. The movie is slightly disturbing since Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) kill people and use the bodies for the pie shop. Surprisingly, people come around from everywhere to eat these pies. The antagonist of this movie is Signor Pirelli (Sacha Baron Cohen), who plays the rival barber who Todd eventually gets his hands on. The performances of this movie are great and will keep you entertained. All around, the movie is dark, literally. It fits in perfectly though considering it's dark themes.
4. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl
Everyone knows of the notorious Jack Sparrow and he is certainly a good reason to see this movie. The movie revolves around a blacksmith, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), who teams up with Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp), in order to save his love, Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), from pirates who have kidnapped her. The performances are all around brilliant but Depp's was the best. Everything about Jack Sparrow is to die for. Whether it be the heavy eye-liner or the way he twirls his beard, you'll be begging for more.
3. Blow
Blow is the story of a man named George Jung (Depp). He vows to never end up like his parents, who are struggling financially, so he creates a business selling marijuana. After being thrown in jail, he learns from one of his cell mates that the real money can be made in selling cocaine. Once free, that's what his next pursuit becomes. He ultimately controls a very large percentage of the cocaine dealing department in the United States. Depp's performance is very believable and we never really view him as a bad person. You know that once you're able to do that with a cocaine dealer, the performance must have been superb.
2. Secret Window
The Secret Window is one of my favorites. Johnny Depp plays Mort Rainey who is a mystery writer who lives a rather lonely life in his cabin after getting a divorce from his wife. His neighbor is a creepy man named John Shooter (John Turturro) who has accused Rainey of stealing his story. The feud becomes violent and eventually Rainey's dog winds up dead, as do other people. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat and the twist ending made it even better.
1. Edward Scissorhands
Here it is. Number one! I chose Edward Scissorhands because I think this movie is a classic although some people might not think so. It revolves around a gentle young man named Edward Scissorhands (Depp), who is brought down from his dark and quiet home to live with Peg (Dianne Wiest) and her family. Edward was made by The Inventor who died before Edward's completion which results in Edward having scissors for hands. Despite his very Gothic-looking appearance, Edward proves to be the most gentlemanly and kindest of all men in the neighborhood. This movie blasts conformity and stereotypes and I love every minute of it. If you haven't already seen it, you should definitely go buy it.
