Top 5 Junk Foods Gone

A Look at Disappeared Junk Snacks and Beverages

R. Bourne, Ph.D.
In the past few months I have undertaken a secret project: to survey which are the top 5 disappeared junk foods, that is those junk snacks, beverages, bars, or food that have disappeared from the market. I would not say this is a scientific study since the people surveyed (the sample size) is about 100. I am not sure if this is representative of the 250 million people living in the United States.

Anyway here we go. Here you have the top 5 junk foods gone according to the 100 more trustable junk food eaters I have known in my live (my friends)

1. Seven-Up Bars:

I remember having these ones. They are in no way related to the lemon-lime soda still on the market. They were chocolate bars (in milk- and dark-chocolate) divided into seven sections, each with a different filling. I remember we discussed which filling was the best. These bars came up in about 70% of the surveyed people and many selected them as number one they would like to see on the shelves of their supermarket.

2. Holiday Spice Pepsi

I believe it was Christmas of 2000 when this one hit the shelves. It was a classic Pepsi with flavor of cinnamon, nutmeg and some cinnamon too. Although may of my sources indicated different sodas this one came up frequently (25%) so I though there must be something here. There was some upheaval when Pepsi discontinue but business is business so the soda is gone.

3. Gatorgum

This one was mentioned by many of my surveyed friends. It was a gum made by Gatorade. They were available in two types: orange and lemon. They were tasty. But it seem they did not panned out well in the market. So they are gone too.

4. Mug-O-Lunch

This one was our preferred in our college days. You see, in the old days there were no ramen type noodles and this Mug-O-Lunch was essentially the only cheap junk food available. The Mug-O-Lunch flavors were the classic Macaroni & Cheese, Beef Noodle and Chicken Noodle (oh did I like this one!). It was basically a dried powder to be mixed with boiling water and stirred for five minutes. SO this was the predecessor of ramen noodles and was mentioned as one of the products people (at least my friends) would like to see again on the market (yuck!)

5. -Hershey's Cookies 'N' Mint

These ones you, young people, may know them. Once in a while the big candy maker Hershey's makes them out as a limited edition. But in my days (oh my god am I that old?) they were a common product on the grocery store. The Cookies 'N' Mint bar was crunchy and refreshing (as the ads said) and basically it was a wafer chocolate with mint pieces.

Well, these were the most mentioned junk food snacks and bars people would like to see again on the market. But the re were many others (some weird) that I may write in the future. Please comment a lot on this article and tell me which would the product you would like to see on the market shelves again. Thanks!!!
