Top 5 Military Family Fun Guide for San Diego, California

Dotchi Latham
San Diego, California is loaded with places to see and things for military families to do. If you can't think of anything to do then this top 10 list is my gift to you! Being a military wife with two military brats, we've found many fun things to do to occupy our time in San Diego. These are listed in no particular order. Here are my Top 5 favorites.

#1 Military Family Fun for San Diego, CA- Bowling at NASNI
On Monday nights at the Sea N Air Lanes on NASNI your family can bowl for just $1 a game plus the $1 shoe rental. The 25 lane bowling alley has great music, plenty of various sized bowling balls and bumpers for the younger ones in your family that want to join in on the fun. Plus they have the metal guide bars available for the disabled and young ones, a snack bar, arcade games and a bar (just in case Mom needs a beer). What can be more fun than hours of bowling with your family?

#2 Military Family Fun for San Diego, CA- Free Movies
With three different movie theaters to choose from, how could you pass this up? My family especially enjoys the Lowry Theater at NASNI but have also had a lot of fun watching free movies at the Q-zone on the Amphib base and the base theater on NAVBASE. These movies are free and they only ask that you rise for the National Anthem before each showing. Popcorn, candy and Soda Pop can be purchased at the vending counter. These funds help to bring you the free movies. Usually we don't buy popcorn or anything else. But we still have fun!

#3 Military Family Fun for San Diego, CA- Free Museum Tuesdays at Balboa Park
Balboa Park hosts Residents Free Tuesdays to their museums on a rotating schedule. It's okay if you don't have a California license yet, your military dependent ID will work just as well for everyone in the family. This was very helpful to our family in deciding what museums we wanted to buy memberships to instead of buying them and finding out we didn't like it. If you just can't decide where to start, our personal favorites are the Air and Space Museum, Veterans Museum and Memorial Center, Model Railroad Museum and House of Pacific Relations International Cottages.

#4 Military Family Fun for San Diego, CA- Sea World
Sea World offers 1 day free admittance to military members and three immediate family members through their "Here's to the Heroes" program. When you go to get your tickets, there is a special booth on the left hand side just for us military families. You can spend the day on rides, watching shows and having fun. But the inside, it may cost a bit for food and souvenirs. Cushion the blow to your wallets by eating at the buffets and bringing our own lunch. They don't allow you to bring your own drinks or food into the park but you can always walk back to your car for a break. We've really enjoyed this each year.

#5 Military Family Fun for San Diego, CA- Sailing Lessons
Fiddlers Cove Marina and RV Park and U.S. Navy Sailing Center Point Loma hosts sailing lessons each weekend. The sailing lessons are offered to all eligible MWR Patrons and any sponsored guests. The courses offered are Basic Sailing, Intermediate Sailing and Advanced Sailing. Each sailing class is held on a Saturday and Sunday. These courses are a lot of fun and once you become an "A Mate" or "B Skipper" you can rent boats for a day for your military family fun time.

Michele, I never knew how cool San Diego was until we moved there.

RC I passed that along to him. Also, thank you for the compliment on Military families. It is a very hard life to live.

Marc, we do that too! Love the splash zone! Except when it's chilly. Then it made us downright COLD. But on the hots days, oh that was so much fun! And we'd ride Atlantis and hope the waterfall would pour at the wrong time. It did that once and man were we soaked!

Whenever I'm at Sea World, I try and sit as close to the splash zone as possible, hoping to get drenched like crazy...

First, please pass my thanks on to your husband for serving his country and helping to keep us safe, and second, I appreciate you and your children -- the families of the military sacrifice in many ways. So nice to hear about the free events (love Sea World and Balboa Park). Thank you for writing this article, Dotchi!

San Diego was one place we were never stationed - too bad we missed all of this! Cheers.
