Top 5 Oprah's Book Club Books

Siun Griffin
Oprah's Book Club has been going since 1996 and since then it has been a great inspiration to many people. As a result of Oprah's Book Club many more people are including reading in their lives. There have been 66 books recommended by Oprah since the club's beginning. Every book suggested is excellent in its own way and everyone will have their favorites. This is my top 5 list for Oprah's Book Club books.

Love in the Time of Cholera
'Love in the Time of Cholera' was written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez; a Noble Prize winning writer. The story is perhaps one of the best ever love stories. The love shown in this book isn't all roses, but is shown in its true colors, which can sometimes be ugly and painful. The book is set in the Caribbean in the late 1800s.

The Road
'The Road' was written by the reclusive author, Cormac McCarthy. This story is bleak and depressing, so be prepared before you begin reading it. Despite its dark them, 'The Road' is vividly written and is cause for some deep thinking. The book demonstrates the darkest parts of human nature, while also showing some the best. In 2007 'The Road' won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Night
I first read Night a few years before Oprah's Book Club's inception for English class in school. Night is an autobiography written by Elie Wiesel and is an excellent insight into the horrors of the Holocaust. Night is Elie Wiesel's story of how he was imprisoned by the Nazis in concentration camps. This is one book that everyone should read so we can better understand what happened during World War II and teach future generations so that it is not repeated.

East of Eden
'East of Eden' is written by the very well known author, John Steinbeck. The book was written for John Steinbeck's sons to read when they were adults. This is a wonderful book that covers all of life's major themes: love, hate, beauty, ugliness, good and evil. 'East of Eden' has been in print without a break since 1952.

Song of Solomon
'Song of Solomon' was written by Toni Morrison ins 1977. Toni Morrison is one of America's best authors and has won both the Pulitzer and Noble Prizes. The story is a touching tale of a man and his quest for his identity and roots. The book also highlights social problems, many of which unfortunately still exist.

This is my top 5 Oprah's Book Club books, it by no means suggests that the other books in the club are not worth considering, the opposite in fact. Choosing a top 5 is not easy. It would be great to hear what your top Oprah's Book Club books are.
