Top 5 Options to Get More Protein for Vegetarians

LubbyPop
Protein is an important part of a balanced nutritional plan. I am a vegetarian and the most common question that I am asked is, "How do you get enough protein?" In all honesty, I really never think about it specifically as long as I consume a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy. In efforts to help those who may be less aware of non-meat products that contain quite a bit of protein, I am going to share with you my top 5 selection for protein rich foods.

#1 - Pulses- which include beans, peas and lentils are an excellent source of protein and are good substitutes for the protein found n meat and fish.

#2 -Dairy and Eggs - So long as you are not vegan milk, eggs, yogurt and cheese are all great sources of protein to help build strong healthy muscles and bones.

#3 - Whole grains- Brown rice, barley, quinoa, oatmeal and wheat which are whole grain have protein and lots of fiber. So the next time you purchase bread, look at the ingredients and check the nutritional information to find breads with the highest level of protein.

#4 - Good old nuts and seeds - Pumpkin, almonds, hemp seeds, sunflower, sesame and peanuts are also a perfect way to sneak in those extra grams of protein. Add nuts to desserts and cereals in the morning, they give a nice crunch and fill you up.

#5- Vegetables- Do not act so surprised, but vegetables are also good sources of protein. Broccoli, kale, spinach, squash and pumpkin can be added to whole grain pastas and soups to ensure you get the correct levels of daily protein intake.

If you balance your diet, being a vegetarian does not have to compromise your overall health. It just means that you have to educate yourself a bit more and be willing to try new foods. Sometimes trying new foods means may also mean trying new ways to prepare meals. The benefits certainly outweigh the costs so give it a try. I ensure that I incorporate as many of the above categories of protein into my family's daily diet as we are all vegetarian. We get regular blood tests done and so far; have never been told that we are protein deficient.
