Top 5 Overall Second Basemen - Your Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide 2009

Timothy Christopher
Second base is usually considered the weakest offensive position on the field. But that doesn't mean that there aren't great second basemen out there that could really help your fantasy baseball team. The premier players at this position can provide just as much fantasy value as any other position player in the game. Here's a look at the five best second basemen.

1. Chase Utley

2. Dustin Pedroia

3. Brandon Phillips

4. Ian Kinsler

5. Howie Kendrick

#1 Overall Second Baseman: Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies

Utley is finally starting to get the praise that he deserves after leading the Phillies to the World Series title last year. He's got one of the purest swings in all of baseball and always makes solid contact with the ball. A repeat performance of his 30+ HR 100+ RBI season of last year seems like a fairly safe bet. No other second baseman will come close to that kind of production, making him extremely valuable.

#2 Overall Second Baseman: Dustin Pedroia, Boston Red Sox

Not much needs to said about the reigning AL MVP. It's probably not realistic that Pedroia hits .326 again this year, but he should definitely hit above .300 and score a ton of runs. He'll hit 15-20 home runs, which isn't bad for a 2B and should make a solid fantasy player.

#3 Overall Second Baseman: Brandon Phillips, Cincinnati Reds

Phillips is a very good second baseman that can hit for a lot of power. If he ever learned to hit for a better average, he would make the move to being a great second baseman. As it is, Phillips will hit over twenty home runs, drive in over 80, and also create some problems on the base path.

#4 Overall Second Baseman: Ian Kinsler, Texas Rangers

Kinsler is extremely valuable for fantasy baseball because he's going to the be the guy that Josh Hamilton is always driving in. Kinsler hits for a high average and has enough pop in his bat to hit quite a few extra base hits.

#5 Overall Second Baseman: Howie Kendrick, Los Angeles Angels

Kendrick is a player most baseball people gush over, and looks due for a huge breakout season if he stays healthy. He is a wizard with the bat and could hit for a very high average this year, and allow Vlad Guerrero to drive him in a number of times this year. Kendrick is a bit of a gamble, but no more so than gambling that Placido Polanco will recover from his terrible season last year, and worth the risk, especially in a keeper league.
