Top 5 Overrated Sitcoms

Bridget Ilene Delaney
It seems that each television season, there is at least one new sitcom that airs. Some sitcoms stay on the air, but it is not understandable why they stay on the air. These sitcoms are rarely funny.

The Office

Just because the British version of The Office was a hit in Britain, the United States thought that it had to make a version of this show. The format works to bring the show to different areas as there can be different branches of a company around the world. However, The Office doesn't seem to have a great plot and while it may reflect some of what happens at offices with a bit of humor, in general, it is boring and about nothing. Even Seinfeld , the "show about nothing" had at least a small plot line in each episode.

Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation is a bit funnier than The Office because sometimes it focuses more on the action of things that are happening instead of the mundane conversations of characters. Sometimes those are even better than the characters talking about what happened. However, in general, Parks and Recreation is a copycat of The Office .

Cougar Town

Cougar Town is a very odd show. It takes the idea of older women dating younger guys to an odd and sometimes creepy level. Courtney Cox's character is often with guys as young as her son who is in high school. The entire show gives off a very creepy feeling of a mother preying on her son's peers as dating material.

Community

Community has the potential to be a funny sitcom. It sometimes gets there with a few of the jokes and situations. However, the study group focuses too much on itself and infighting or odd pranks most of the time for the sitcom to be funny. Instead, Community is like going to a frat house and watching the members act like idiots.

Modern Family

The idea of Modern Family makes it seem like it would be a great sitcom. Why not watch the antics of separate families that are also part of one big family? However, most of the show ends up about a parent yelling at a children. The older step-father may yell at the child. He is also homophobic, even if in later episodes he is growing out of it. This results in him yelling at his son and his partner or giving them gifts that aren't truly gifts. Then, the family that seems normal has the father do things that hurt the kids such as shooting his kid with a BB gun. Then he yells at the kids and his wife yells at him. The entire show is about family members yelling at each other which is not fun to watch. Only the comedy bits are fun, and those would make for a short show.

I agree with you and Davida.

I couldn't agree with you more. I also couldn't see what was so great about "Seinfeld" but I'm sure I'm very much in the minority on that one.
