To be a good ghost hunter you will need to understand what it is you are hunting. So in this article I will run down the top 5 types of hauntings that you will most likely come across in your investigations.Because you never know what you will run into on an investigation, so you must be prepared for anything.

1.Residual Haunt

This being one of the most common type of haunting, you will certainly see this event numerous times. It isn't actually a spirit that is haunting a location. It is an imprint of energy left by an emotional or tragic event, it could even be something that someone did often in their life. Many paranormal investigators describe it as taking a movie and setting it on loop. It will not acknowledge your presence, and will just continue the specific task, or event no matter what. It will happen at the same time every day, week, or possibly even every year. You can experience such things as footsteps,or various noises. There is a theory out that says a residual haunt is more common around deposits of limestone, quartz, and water.

2.Intelligent Haunt

This type of haunt is of a spirit or person that is now deceased. It can interact with people and its surroundings, by such things as slamming doors, bangs, physical touch, voices, or scents(such as perfume, cigars, food).They can also interact with their surroundings by affecting the electromagnetic field that is all around us, and can manipulate the temperature around it. A lot of times these intelligent spirits don't know that they are deceased and are looking for help. If you are at a location that you think has an intelligent haunt, be sure to break out your cameras, as they can also manifest themselves to be visible to the naked eye or a camera lens. But, as you should for any haunted location, be careful. These spirits can be mean, or just mischievous.

3.Poltergeist Haunt

German for "noisy ghost".This type of haunt focuses on the physical interaction of objects and people, and can become quite violent. Things such as books, can fly across the room, beds shake, furniture can even move. It seems to focus around girls in their teen years. It is said that some how teenage girls are able to affect the energy around them. It can also affect people that are at a very stressful time in their life. Another theory about poltergeist is that it could be a bunch of spirits that gather their energy so that they can do things one spirit couldn't do otherwise.

4.Demonic Haunt

Also known as Inhuman haunt. It involves an entity that has never walked on this earth. It has disdain for humans, for whatever reason. These haunts can become very violent and dangerous. Demonic entities are very strong and have the power to physically hurt the people it is haunting. It is believed to prey on families and individuals that are in crisis. While investigating a demonic haunt, you can experience such things as a strong stench of rotting flesh, or growling noises. When these entities interact with people it is usually very violent, anything from pushing, scratching, and hitting can occur. There are even cases where demonic entities have told people to do things, such as committing suicide, and telling people to hurt others. So be very cautious if dealing with this type of haunt.

5.Shadow People

This kind of haunt is pretty straight forward. The name pretty much tells it all. Shadow People are, you guessed it, shadowy figures. They are spirits that are said to dart around a haunted location. Usually people see them at the corner of their eye, and appear to be quite shy. These figures have no discerning features, and can range from the size of a very tall man to a small child. There is a theory out there that says these are spirits that are afraid to pass on to the other side.
