Know Your Shelter Location and Distance From Home
The nearest shelter is the best place to be when strong thunderstorms come into the area. If there is the slightest threat of tornado, you will need to get out and get safe in a hurry. There is no time to call the local law police for the address of the nearest shelter. Just like kids are taught to learn their phone number with repetition, you should learn the address of the nearest tornado shelter and how far it is from your home.
Pack a Bag With Only the Essentials
The essentials bag should contain just that - essentials. A PSP, high school yearbook and the favorite picture on the night stand may be very important, but these are not essential items. What are essentials are personal documents, identification, copies of home insurance policies and non-perishable foods items and water. Figure on one backpack for each person in the home and leave them sitting in a location very near the exit door.
Order Extra Copies of Personal Documents
How many personal documents does a family really need? Well, according to society, about 100. All jokes aside, personal documents like social security cards, driver licenses, birth certificates and medical records can be difficult to replace with no original. One copy should be placed in a safety deposit box or home safe. A second copy should be packed in the emergency bag. This allows you to have two documents, just in case.
Keep Disaster Supplies in the Home
A disaster kit should include batteries, flashlights, portable radio, water, non-perishable food, over the counter medications, prescription medications and cash. Credit cards can also be added to the tornado disaster kit. Some people claim cash is better because chances are no electricity will be available to process a credit card, but that does not mean that will always be the case.
Plan, Communicate, Practice
There is rarely a time when a tornado siren will sound with enough time to make it to a shelter. These tips are to help a family prepare for a tornado that is expected with a tornado watch or warning. When in doubt, if there is any threat of a tornado hitting your area, move to the shelter with all emergency supplies and wait out the storms there until the coast is clear.
