Many service-oriented companies use mystery shoppers to rate the performance of an establishment and its employees. Mystery shoppers do not communicate directly with the service-oriented companies, rather, they are hired to do contractual work by a third party called a research company.

What does it take to be a mystery shopper?

Extensive training isn't required to be a mystery shopper, but in order to be a good mystery shopper you must possess the following traits:

1. Ability to follow directions - When you receive an assignment there are forms you must read first before you conduct the assessment. These forms are written instructions and it gives you specific tips on how to conduct the assignment, what to look for, what to avoid and other important facts about the shop assigned to you.

2. Attention to detail - You must be detail-oriented because your primary responsibility is to assess the performance of an establishment and its employees. This means you must have a keen eye and take note of every little detail that you observed during your visit.

3. A good time-keeper - One of the most important points a mystery shopper should take note of is time. Most assignments require that you provide the specific time you arrived and left the shop, the time it took for an employee to greet you, how much time you waited in line, etc. Timing is crucial for a mystery shopper that's why most shoppers bring along a pocket stopwatch when doing their assignment. Note that you must be cautious when using a watch, don't let anyone see you are timing them or you'll risk being identified as a mystery shopper.

4. You must be punctual - Mystery-shopping assignments are time-sensitive. It requires that you conduct a shop on a specific day and time. After you conduct a shop, you are required to submit your report as soon as possible. Thus, you must be punctual in order to be a good mystery shopper.

5. You must be responsible - You are providing valuable input on the performance of a certain establishment and its employees. Therefore you must be responsible; conduct your shops objectively and accurately. The input you provide will help the companies improve their service which will benefit you as a consumer in the long run.
