So who should we be looking for in 2010? That's a good question. The purpose of this article is to give you a projective outcome for 2010. I am in no way capable of looking into the future and knowing who will be on top, but focusing on this year I can somewhat give you an idea of who will be successful in 2010.
1. Drake
I think that everyone has to agree that Drake has accomplished what very few artists have been able to achieve in the amount of time that he has. Drake started out as a cast member in the TV show, Degrassi. Up until then, he had not produced any albums, nor was he signed to a label. I personally never once heard about Drake before he signed to Cash Money Records. The one song of his that I do remember hearing back in 2007, was "Don't You Have a Man," and even then I didn't know who the artist was. What is apparent to me though is that for someone who STILL doesn't have an album released and is STILL coming out with hit singles, that isn't anything less than greatness. His album, 'Thank Me Later,' has been pushed back a few times, but is anticipated to release in March of 2010. This may be the one album that everyone actually purchases.
2. Jason Derulo
Jason has actually been in the music industry since he was 12 years old! Can you believe that? He started out writing songs for many other artists at the age of 16 and soon after realized that he wanted to be a solo artist. In the music industry, most labels don't actually release their artists until they hit a peak age of around 19-21; ex. Jazmine Sullivan. Jason's first single was a worldwide hit called "Watcha Say." The single alone has put Jason on the map with other R&B and Rap artists. His album is due to release in early 2010; you don't want to miss this!
3. Nicki Minaj
Nicki has BY FAR taken the throne of being the best female rapper/lyricist. She's unique, her style is appealing, her lyrics express what everyone [wants] to say but can't, and she's original. She recognized what female rappers lacked, and brought it to the table. Fans love Nicki because Nicki loves her fans; or "Barbies" as she says. Like Drake, Nicki has been on many well-known Rap and R&B artists' singles with no prior record or singles; just a mixtape. She's currently working on her album which is predicted to release mid 2010. Both Drake and Nicki had the whole Young Money crew behind them in every step promoting so I don't find it hard to understand their success. I think it is a bit interesting how the WHOLE Young Money Crew is on top; to name a few: Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Tyga, Jay Sean, etc. Definitely look out for Nicki Minaj and the whole Young Money crew.
4. Monica
Now Monica isn't a new artist, but in a way, she is. Monica has never really had a "hit" album, she stated that herself on her show "Still Standing." Though in 2010, I do believe she'll reemerge. Her show basically shows viewers what she's working on as an artist and a person, and who Monica really is. She felt like no one really knew the real Monica so they weren't buying her records, but this time around she's coming out full force. Monica is not only doing R&B now, she's stepping into hip-hop a little more in her songs. So definitely look out for Monica in 2010 and check out her single "Still Standing" if you haven't already.
5. Lola Monroe
Lola was a video vixen, and is now a female rap artist. That statement is a bit cynical to me, but if that works for her it's fine with me! Her flow isn't too much like anyone else's, but I think anyone can agree that she isn't exactly on top as far as a female rap artist, but she too is still emerging so you have to give her some credit . Lola has been on a few remixes (including '5 Star Chick') but isn't working on a record at the moment. Still, you should look out for this girl next year. I have a feeling she's going to surprise us with a few hits.
