Browser Security
Almost every web browser out there (IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome) has security improvements with every update, especially in version upgrades. Security holes can lead to your personal information being stolen or your computer getting infected by a virus, spyware, malware, etc. Most people that get infected with viruses tend to have their default browser out of date.
Bug Fixes
There are dozens of bugs that are fixed with every update of a browser. Many of these bugs can affect browsing performance, compatibility with other add-ons, software and are the cause of browser crashes.
Speed
This one can depend on the specific browser, but generally every upgrade tends to be faster then the last. Speed of browsing the web is a major factor for most people and for good reason.
Compatibility Issues
While we develop our websites to be cross browser and backwards compatible, some web design companies do not. Major version upgrades affect how certain coding languages are rendered. So if you stick with some outdated browser, you are likely to be missing out on new web features/capabilities. Not to mention - and I think I can speak for most web designers here - undoubtedly look forward to the day that I do not have to code for IE 7 anymore either!
Add-ons and Functionality
Browsers like Firefox that have many useful add-ons get better with each update. This affords you more functionality and productivity.
In ending, it makes all the sense in the world to keep your browser updated; Internet Explorer specifically. It really is not complicated at all - even for non techies. Simply download, open, and follow the prompts.
