Baseball fans are already feeling the itch to see some games played. With spring training right around the corner, this article will help you to keep your eyes on some top prospects. The focus is on the top 5 designated rookie hitters that could make a difference in 2009.

1. Dexter Fowler played for the USA team in Beijing in 2008. What makes him number one on my list is that he bats right and left handed. Of course, he bats better right-handed but he is still a threat on the left. This makes him great for designated hitter because it does not matter what pitcher a team has in.

2. Matt LaPorta has been compared to Ryan Braun. He was drafted by the Brewers in 2007. He has very little speed but his contact is impeccable. When he makes contact, it is solid. He has been hitting well in the minors and the Brewers might bring him up this year. He would make a great designated hitter and could possibly help the Brewers stay strong at the plate.

3. Travis Snider could be a big hitter for the Jays. If the Jays get another big batter before the season begins, then Snider will most likely not get into starting, so look for him as a designated hitter. He could be a home-run hitter and the RBI hitter that the Jays need.

4. Max Ramirez is a good catcher with a great bat. He was under-drafted by the Braves in 2002. With plenty of time in the minors, he has had enough time to adjust and grow. If he does not start as catcher, he is a sure bet for designated hitter. He has power, a good eye, and discipline to wait on the pitch. He should be fun to watch.

5. Andrew McCutchen might get himself out of the minors this year. He was drafted in 2005 by the Pirates and has been in the minors since. His contact needs some work but he has good patience and speed. If the Pirates pull him up, it is likely that he will not start but could step in as a designated hitter.

These hitters are not guaranteed to be all-stars their first year but we all hope to discover another Longoria. LaPorta's cards are pretty sought after by minors collectors and MLB collectors if they have been watching scouting reports. Good luck with your fantasy teams!
