Top 5 Running Essentials for Fall

Angie M
Once again, the season of fall is upon us. Many joggers and runners may jump on the treadmill this time of the year due to the declining temperatures and shorter daylight hours, but you don't really have to. There are a few essential pieces of gear that can enable you to keep your routine, despite the not so pleasant weather.

Fall Running Essential # 1: Gloves

Although it seems that any pair of gloves will do, choose wisely. There are gloves especially for runners and joggers that are designed with reflective panels and that resist moisture. Both are important features to have. These can usually be purchased under $20 at almost any sporting goods store and come in a variety of well known brands, such as Nike, Asics and other trade names. Sometimes the sports equipment department at your local chain store such as Target and WalMart will carry lesser known brands of running gloves, depending on your location.

Fall Running Essential # 2: Moisture Wicking Socks

During this time of the year, feet can easily become dry and chapped. This is especially so for those who run or jog outdoors. If you invest in a pair of socks that will keep your feet both warm and dry, this can help avoid common problems such as cracking and sore feet. These items can be purchased in various price ranges, but expect to pay at least $9 for a good pair. The runner looking for a reasonable price and high quality product may want to consider DeFeet Cloud 9 running socks. These run about $10 and can be purchased at www.defeet.com.

Fall Running Essential # 3: Pullover

It's always smart to have too much clothing than not enough. The good thing about the pullover is that it can easily be removed. As with other products for runners and joggers, this too can be purchased with reflection strips for personal protection. One of the best pullovers for working out in my opinion is the women's AEXK Chamois hoodie. Despite the price tag, $65 for this particular one, it is well worth the purchase. The fabric is extremely soft, wicks away moisture and comes with some stretch. However, this pullover does not come with reflection strips. Although this item may be carried at some sporting good stores, it can also be purchased online at The North Face, www.thenorthface.com.

Fall Running Essential # 4 Lined Pants

Purchasing lined running or jogging pants can be crucial during cooler months. Although items should be somewhat snug, there should be enough give to provide for comfort. Moisture wicking varieties are widely available, as well as other optional amenities. Champion is a favorite brand in these pants because they can provide a good product at reasonable costs. A good pair of pants, lined or unlined will cost you around $50 at www.champion.com. They have a wide selection of color and variety to allow for personal tastes.

Fall Running Essential # 5: New Shoes

If you run or jog frequently, it's always recommended to get a new pair of shoes before the next season officially starts. In most cases, you will find that your shoes are lacking traction, which can lead to slips and falls resulting in injury. This is especially so when conditions start to become slippery. KSwiss Tubes are a great running shoe that I personally own and can endorse. They have traction comparable to that of cleats and are really comfortable. Shoe Sensation carries these shoes for around $70, depending on the individual store and sometimes you can catch them much cheaper. They are constructed mainly of mesh and come in a variety of different colors.
