Top 5 Ski Resorts for Beginners in US

Sensational Ski Resorts for Newbie Skiers and Snowboarders

M.G. Hardiman
Years ago, learning to ski meant taking the ski lift to the top of mountain and hoping to get down in one piece. Fortunately, times have changed and resorts offer great programs for the novice skier or snowboarder. The best ski resorts not only have beginners-only slopes but segregate these runs to prevent newbies from making the all-too-common mistake of heading for more advanced slopes and big trouble. The best ski resorts understand the special challenges faced by new skiers and snowboarders. So, they take good care of the slopes and keep lessons focused on the fundamentals of skiing and snowboarding. The best ski resorts also know that for beginners it's all about gaining confidence, so the ski instructors that teach beginners bring that special touch.

Do you want to hit the ski slopes this winter, but have never skied? Ready to take some beginner ski lessons from the very best? Check out these Top 5 Ski Resorts for Beginners in the US. Each one has a sensational program, great instructors, and designated or segregated slopes for beginners. The best of the best for beginners of all ages and abilities.

Both my sons snowboard. We live in Colorado, so they've been to Copper Mountain a lot and have also been to Breckenridge and Steamboat. I've been to Breckenridge and Steamboat in the off season (you can get some good deals on places to stay). They are really beautiful places - spectacular scenery.

It's not easy at the beginning, is it? Thanks for sharing your story, Tracie.

  • Tracie Walker12/9/2009

I went skiing one time, in North Carolina. It was fun. Even though I was awful at it.

Good information, Lorraine. Colorado's great for skiers of all levels, beginner to advanced. Thanks for your comments.

In Colorado, the skiing for beginners is good everywhere. I'm pre-beginner and choose to stay off the slopes completely in efforts to maintain ability to WALK. There's a mom-and-pop ski place at Kennebec Pass in Hesperus, Colorado. Beginners can walk up the hill if they don't like the rikkety chair lift. And they'll give your kids a ride home if you forget to pick them up at 4 o'clock.

Good to know, Heather. Thanks for your read.

Thanks, Jenny. You have to like the cold if you're gonna ski, that's for sure!! :)

  • Jenny Heart12/3/2009

I have to agree with JerseyNana. I just hate the cold but great article.
