From The Darkness' first album, "Permission To Land" which was released in 2003, "Friday Night" is a happy little tune about...well...Friday nights! Justin Hawkins sings about remembering his school days, and the girl who used to sit beside him in class. It's one of the least silly songs they ever made but it still has their distinctive sound to it. It's also excellent for jumping around to!
4. "Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End)"
In 2003, The Darkness released a seasonal track to compete in the race for the UK Christmas number one single. They were beaten to the post by Gary Jules' "Mad World" but took second place, even beating 2003's "Pop Idol" contestants' single. "Christmas Time" is a tune about a man hoping Christmas won't end while he pines for his career driven girlfriend. The accompanying music video is fantastically cheesy, and even adds the obligatory cute children to join the song at the end!
3. "Seemed Like a Good Idea At the Time"
An unusually serious song from the high pitched rockers, "Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time" was a track on the band's second album, "One Way Ticket To Hell". It's astonishing how well Hawkins' voice lends itself to a more mellow track. While the usual shrieking and comedy lyrics are always appreciated, this song is definitely a good break from the norm.
2. "Knockers"
Did I already mention comedy lyrics? Well, "Knockers" is full of them! This song is about a man who is fed up of being alone, so he gets the desperate urge to re-connect with a former lover who is...let's say....rotund. The only compliment he can seem to manage about her is, "I love what you've done with your hair" which is repeated through the chorus. Not entirely politically correct or polite, but if it is listened to with good humour, it's a great track.
1. "I Believe In A Thing Called Love"
It wouldn't be right to list the band's best tracks without this being the number one choice! "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" was the song which propelled The Darkness to fame, charting at number two in 2003. It is simply a song about a man who is in love. An overused concept perhaps, but not filled with soppy clichés. It is a perfect rock song which will live on for many, many years!
The Darkness have released some fantastic songs in the past and it is exciting to think about what they will bring us now they are back together. We won't get to hear what they have in store for us until June when they play the Download Festival but they have promised they will be working on their third album in the meantime. For further information about the band's reunion, take a look at their official website!
