Overdoing things, however, is not. It can leave you feeling sluggish and bloated and wishing that you hadn't had that extra martini or piece of pie. I know, I've been there, done that. I do have some ideas though for giving your body a boost.
Lemon Juice and Hot Water
Nothing helps me feel reset and rebalanced better than drinking a hot, steaming cup of water mixed with the juice form half a lemon, half a teaspoon of honey, and a sprinkle or two of cinnamon. Lemon is known to help your liver, the honey is primarily there to make the lemon taste better, and cinnamon is a well documented blood sugar aid. When I need to drop a few extra pounds, I drink this every morning instead of tea or coffee.
Go for a Power Walk
I think it's important to maintain a program of exercise even through the holidays. However, I know just as well as anyone that it is easy for a program to fall by the wayside. If this is the case, go for a power walk the same day as the party or gathering (wake up early if you have to) and then go for another the next day. This will help. You may not stave off all of the weight gain, but you will at least help things a little.
Practice the Art of Balance
Did you eat too much the day before? Practice the art of balancing by limiting your calorie intake for the next day or two. Don't be obsessed about counting - just use your judgment. If you didn't wake up hungry the day after a party, skip breakfast. Focus on fruits and vegetables and some protein for the rest of the day. Repeat the next day if you feel you need to.
Take Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is one of those herbs that can help the liver. It is for this reason that you can use it to prevent hangovers. Take a dose before you go to the party or get-together and then another dose directly after it. Even if you don't prevent a hangover completely you'll help your liver considerably which will aid your body in the long term.
Keep these strategies in mind as you celebrate this Holiday Season. If you overdo it, don't worry. Just put these strategies to use and move on! There is no need to stress out and beat yourself up. Eating these tasty foods is supposed to be enjoyable, right? Remember that eating a cookie or two is not the end of the world. But, if you eat ten cookies, plus a piece of pie... then you just may need to give your body a boost. Your body will reset itself if you give it the right tools.
