1. Matilda by Roald Dahl
This is one of my favorite books of all time, even as an adult. Written for those who love the written word, this book is about an extraordinary girl who does amazing things with her mind. This book is great for the reader who loves a story where anything is possible.
2. Shadow Horse by Alison Hart
A great summer book for girls who love animals and who enjoy solving a mystery, this is a story of a young teenager who finds herself in a whirlwind of trouble and turmoil after the horse she trained and loved dies under mysterious circumstances. It is a great story of love, loss and the true meaning of family.
3. Dealing with Dragons (Book 1 of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles) by Patricia C. Wrede
When Cimorene decides that she dislikes the life of a princess, she runs away and volunteers to be kept captive by a group of dragons. A fantasy novel that highlights the success and pitfalls of making your own decisions, this is a great summer book for girls who love when fairy-tales go awry.
4. Amy Number Seven (Replica 1) by Marilyn Kaye
Written about a girl with unbelievable talents who knows very little of her past, this is a summer book for girls who love dark secrets. Readers will find themselves immersed in government conspiracy, scientific discovery and warnings from sources unknown.
5. In the Realm of the Never Fairies: Secret World of Pixie Hollow by Monique Peterson
Has your young reader ever wondered what the world of a fairy is like? This book holds all of the answers. Written in field-guide fashion, each page is beautifully illustrated and noted with facts about the history, hobbies and habits of the fairies in Never Land.
If you have a book that you feel should be on the top 5 summer books for girls, please mention it in the comment field below. Be sure to include both the title and the author name so that others can look it up easily.
*Although these books are recommended reads for girls 9 to 13, they are all excellent reads that adults may enjoy as well.
