With Super Bowl XLVI (46) this Sunday many sports fans, like me, are reflecting on the NFL's biggest night in sports. Does the New England Patriots have what it takes to reclaim their victory over the New York Giants they lost to in Super Bowl XLII (42)? Or will New York take another Super Bowl victory home with them?
With so much on the line Super Bowl 46 is setting up to be one for the history books. But what about the other Super Bowl games? Some of the greatest moments in football history have happened on the field during a Super Bowl game. Forget the Super Bowl commercials, the half time shows and football players' personal lives. This is about the game. This is my top five Super Bowl's and why they are worth of being considered the greatest Super Bowl games ever.
Super Bowl XXXII (32) - Denver Broncos vs. Green Bay Packers
Played on January 25, 1998 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, this game had possibly one of the biggest build-up's in recent Super Bowl history; legendary player John Elway vs. Brett Favre. There was a lot riding on the line with this game, especially with Green Bay defending their Super Bowl win the year before over the Patriots.
But, in the end it was Elway and the Broncos that would ultimately take home the Super Bowl victory in XXXII. This would also be Elway's first Super Bowl win after losing three times previously.
Standout players for this game include Terrell Davis who managed to rush for 157 yards and scored three touchdowns. Davis also pulled off the game winning touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in the game, making it one of the most dramatic finishes in a Super Bowl game.
John Elway also managed to have a standout moment in the game when he managed an airborne third-down scramble late in the game.
Super Bowl XXXX (40) - Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Seattle Seahawks
Played on February 6th, 2006 at Ford Field in Detroit, this Super Bowl game was billed as the "Passport to the Super Bowl" for Canadian viewers in Windsor, Ontario. A deal was worked out for a special viewing in Canada due to Detroit's proximity to the boarder. The game was also broadcast around the world allowing it a huge global audience.
The Steelers managed to emerge from "unlikely to win" at the start of the season to taking home their fifth Super Bowl win with a 21-10 win over Seattle. The Steelers worked hard all season to make it to the big game, and didn't disappoint on the field.
Right out of the gate Willie Parker pulled off one of the biggest plays of the whole game when he managed to run a 75 yard touchdown run from scrimmage. The Steelers would continue to dominate the game led by the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl championship, Ben Roethlisberger.
Super Bowl 40 was also the final game for Jerome "The Bus" Bettis before he retired. Bettis showed his hometown of Detroit one last time why he is considered one of the best players in NFL history. Bettis would close out his career by saying in a commercial for Disney, "I'm going to Disney World, and I'm taking The Bus."
Super Bowl XIII (13) - Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Dallas Cowboys
Many fans consider this Super Bowl game to be their favorite, or at least on of the most controversial of all Super Bowl games. Played on January 21st, 1979 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, this game was the Cowboys' chance to redeem themselves from an upsetting loss to Pittsburgh in Super Bowl X (10).
While the Dallas Cowboys managed to put on a great game, in the end they couldn't over come turnovers, drops and a controversial penalty in the second half. All of this allowed Pittsburgh to win the game 35-31. This game would later be included in the NFL's Greatest Games.
You have to give credit to Dallas for trying to win, and for a period of time it seemed like they could overcome their problems throughout the game. With a 4-yard touchdown pass from Roger Staubach to Butch Johnson the Cowboys brought their score up to 35-31 with 0:22 left in the game. The Steelers managed to get the ball and run out the clock for a second victory over Dallas in just three years.
Super Bowl XVII (17) - Miami Dolphins vs. Washington Redskins
Played at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena on January 30th, 1983 this is another classic game many will put on their top 10 list of greatest Super Bowl games ever played. This game came on the heals of a 57-day long players' strike that reduced the usual 16 game season to 9 games. The Dolphins had been hyped up going into this game as the "Killer Bees" and were all but expected to win.
Miami started off the game well, and quickly brought the score to a 10-10 tie with Alvin Garrett's 4-yard touchdown reception with under 2 minutes left in the first half. Fulton Walker would return the ensuing kickoff with a record 98 yard touchdown that gave the Dolphins a 17-10 lead. But it was the second half where the fireworks really started.
The Redskins came into the second half hard. John Riggins caught a pass and broke a tackle from Miami cornerback Don McNeal and managed to run 43-yards for the touchdown, bringing Washington a score of 20-17 with just over 10 minutes left in the game.In the end, despite the great effort put in by McNeal, he was outnumbered in weight and size as he met with Riggins who ran into him full steam, hit him high, and ran over him to make it to the end zone for the Redskins first Super Bowl victory.
Super Bowl XLII (42) - New York Giants vs. New England Patriots
Played on February 3rd, 2008 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, this game is what has brought us to Super Bowl 46 and New England trying to redeem itself from the stunning loss to the Giants in 2008. The Patriots went into the game with a perfect score of 18-0, which included their season games and postseason games, and were heavily favored to win the Super Bowl and accomplish a historic perfect season.
The Giants came into the game determined not to let the Patriots walk away with their perfect season, and had the benefit of winning their away games prior to their trip to the Super Bowl. Eli Manning's final drive would be the deciding factor that led New York to their 17-14 win over New England.
Everyone will always remember where they were the night New York spoiled New England's chance at Super Bowl victory, and everyone will remember where they were this Sunday when the Giants meet the Patriots again. Will New England take back the championship from New York? Only time will tell, and whether this game will be another one for the record books.
