Top 5 Super-Foods

With people wanting to stay healthy and eat healthy foods, it is popular to know what foods are considered super-foods These foods have few calories and many nutrients. They also tend to be good sources of antioxidants. Health Castle contacted physicians in order to come up with a list of the top five super-foods Here is what they found.

Walnuts

Walnuts have fiber, protein, vitamins B and E, Omega 3 Fatty Acids. They also contain magnesium. In 2004, the FDA said that walnuts are a super-food Plus, walnuts can be eaten by vegetarians and vegans.

Flax Seeds

Flax Seeds are a vegetarian super-food as they are derived from a plant source. The provide Omega 3 Fatty Acids. They also provide an antioxidant phytoestrogen called lignan. Lignan has shown promising results in fighting diseases. It especially shows promise in fighting breast cancer and perhaps other cancers.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate is being found everywhere now from fruit juices to candy. The reason for this is that pomegranate is a known super-food Pomegranate is safe for vegans and vegetarians. It contains tannins, anthocyanins, and polyphenols. All of these are antioxidants and the pomegranate contains more antioxidants than other fruit juices or red wine. Pomegranate can also lower blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol.

Salmon

It is said that salmon is the perfect meat to use in place of others. It has Omega 3 Fatty Acids and protein. It is best to eat wild salmon. Canned salmon is usually wild salmon.

Dark Greens

It has always been known that vegetables are good for you. They provide nutrients and roughage. Dark green vegetables have phytonutrients, iron, vitamins A and C, and calcium. They are high in fiber, which makes them filling. However, they are low in calories, which makes them a good food to eat in order to not gain weight. Dark green vegetables also are good for heart health. Of course, they are vegetarian and vegan friendly. Examples of dark green vegetables are broccoli, green beans and asparagus.
