Looe Key Reef Resort and Dive Center - Feel the wind in your hair as you head out on the open sea. A short boat ride from the resort's dock transports you to an underwater adventure land. Go snorkeling around the Looe Key coral reef and through the National Marine Sanctuary. If you visit during the summer, become a part of the audience at the Looe Key Underwater Music Festival. This once a year extravaganza is a party both under and on top of the water. Typically, 600 divers snorkel around the reef while music blasts through water resistant speakers attached to the underside of boats. Colorful mermaid and "Lost World of Atlantis" costumes are worn by the festival goers who choose to stay aboard the scores of boats which arrive to help pump music to the divers.
National Key Deer Refuge- Wander around over 9,000 acres of trails and pastures at the national refuge. The preserve was created in 1957 to protect the "Key Deer," the smallest species of Virginia white-tailed deer in existence. A total of seventeen federally protected species reside within the protective borders of the refuge.
Boondocks Grille and Drafthouse - Please everyone in your traveling party, regardless of age at this Big Pine Key icon. The facility lays claim to the biggest Tiki hut in the Florida Keys. While mom and dad are enjoying live music and adult beverages from the full bar, the kids will be safely off having some fun of their own. The kid-friendly grill offers a fun-filled miniature golf experience for both little ones and adults. If you are traveling with a pet, just about any pet, then this is the place for you to dine. The pet patio welcomes dogs, cats, snakes and even the occasional three-toed sloth or two. Pets receive a cold bowl of water and a treat. A "Pet Party" is held the first Sunday of each month and includes a meal cooked especially for their species. The impromptu petting zoo is a hit with animal lovers of all ages.
Bahia Honda State Park - Cast a line from the fishing pier, go snorkeling around the National Marine Sanctuary or hike around the 500 tropical acres which encompass the state park. Organized snorkeling tours and kayak rentals are available for a fee at the park office. Find a shady picnic table near the concession stand to have lunch after a morning spent exploring the park. Don't forget to pick up some keepsakes at the state park gift shop before heading back to your hotel or campground.
Veterans Memorial Park - Spend some time lounging on a pristine tropical beach while vacationing in the Lower Keys. The park offers plenty of elbow room and includes a picnic area and welcomes canine sun seekers too.
