1- Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden

2- South Carolina State Museum

The museum is housed inside a textile mill which was built in 1893. Browse the exhibits depicting the formation of South Carolina as a state and the cultural history of the region. Little ones will enjoy the hands-on aspect of one of the largest children's museums in the United States. 4- Congaree National Park

Step away from the modern world on 22,2000 uncrowded acres less than a 20 minute drive from downtown Columbia. Strap on a pair of hiking boots and explore rugged trails leading past a floodplain forest, giant hardwood trees and bald cypress trees. Plan a stop at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center to learn more about the history the park, pick up a trail map or participate in naturalist programs. Outdoor recreational activities at Congaree National Park include kayaking, fishing, canoeing and bird watching.

5- Fort Jackson Army Museum and South Carolina State House

The armed forces museum allows you to transport back in time while viewing over 4,000 artifacts stemming from World War II. Tour the exhibits and see the transformations uniforms and military vehicles have undergone over the decades since the second world war. Construction on the historic building began in 1851, but building was halted in 1865 due to the rapidly approaching soldiers of General Sherman's Union forces. The State House was completed in 1907 and includes the chambers of South Carolina's General Assembly. Public tours are offered on week days.
