There are 5 things you can do to help yourself
First, Find out how much of the thruway is closed. You can call the police or highway department. If you don't get the answers you were looking for then go online and check the local news station websites. They usually have the latest accident reports and list any major highway closings. Get the facts on from which exit to which and possibly how long will it be closed.
Then, find any old map of the area your visiting. Ask your friends or family if they have one stashed away somewhere so you can look at different routes around the accident. The map will show you main streets that you can take to get yourself to the next possible thruway ramp that is open. If it is a weekday around rush hour be aware of bumper to bumper driving and possible lengthy delays. You can look online at maps of your area using websites such as mapquest.com. These websites show you directions using highways and side streets. They even calculate mileage and time it takes to get to your destination.
Don't forget to make sure you have plenty of gas before you head towards any possible traffic because you can never tell how long you will get stuck waiting for other cars to get moving.
Charge your cell phone if you happen to have your charger with you before you leave. If you don't have the charger then turn off your cell phone to conserve the battery.
Borrow a drink such as water or gatorade and a snack such as a granola bar or a cereal bar incase you need it. you don't want to get dehydrated or get too hungry when you need to be sharp traveling a whole new way that your unfamiliar with.
These tips will assist you with your situation and hopefully keep you out of any further possible troubles. Don't panic when a new challenge comes your way because getting past this will only help you learn about different ways of doing things and traveling places.

Post a CommentHi Dale, This actually happened to me last week. I was babysitting my grandchild 1 1/2 hrs away and when it was time for me to leave, the only way home was closed. The tv said it might be until after 10pm when it would open again. This caused quite an upset considering I had to pick my husband up from work on my way back home. What a mess he was telling me to go one way and my son was telling me another, in the mean time it was getting later and later. Your suggestions are wise to follow. Everyone should have a map in their car. I had to go 45 minutes out of my way, and so did a few other hundered people. Thanks for the suggestions, they really do work.
