Top 5 Things Wrong with the New Scrubs

The Main Reasons I Don't like the Direction of the New Scrubs Season 9 and Why

They only retained one Intern:

It's easy to see why they brought back Denise, but she wasn't the only intern that was developed during season 8. Personally, I thought Sunny, Deric and Katie all did a good job establishing themselves as likeable characters that would be worth watching. I especially liked Sunny and how she contrasted so well with Denise. One is so happy, cheery and perky, while the other is blunt, negative, and cynical. When trying to introduce new characters into a series that has been on a long time, characters need time to grow on the skeptical audience that is used to the people already on the show. So why spend season 8 of Scrubs, developing some quality main character replacements, allowing them to grow on the audience, and then only keep 1 (Denise) and expect long time Scrubs fans to just except 3 new main characters (Lucy, Drew, and Cole)?

They changed the main set:

Why change something that is working well? Instead of keeping the same Sacred Hart set as the main location for the series to take place, they decided to switch it to a medical school. First of all there is Turk. Why would somebody that just became Chief of Surgery decide to become a professor? Then there is Dr. Cox who just became Chief of Medicine and we are supposed to believe that he decided to give up that top job, to go be a professor at a medical school? With Dr. Cox and Turk both re-signed for the new show, why not just keep the same hospital set and continue to let those 2 run Sacred Hart?

They made Lucy the Narrator:

The narrator of a show can make or break it for many audience members. As a completely new character it's unknown how well she'll be received. Personally, I'm not a fan. For one, she is supposed to be 22 years old, but she could easily pass for 30 already. I liked Katie much more and think she would have been a better narrator.

The Intro:

While I agree the introduction should not have been kept the same, I really don't like the way the old Scrubs theme is just sped up. I think it would be better if they came up with a new theme song, but still had the same skit of different people holding the x-ray until the main character finally puts it up to the light. If you have Scrubs season 8 on DVD, check out the interns "webisodes". I love the interns intro.

The Guys:

While anybody can enjoy the show, Scrubs has always been geared more toward a male audience. A lot of the off wall scenarios I can see coming up and laughing at with my buddies while the girls roll their eyes at how ridiculous it sounds. Part of the reason the show was so successful at reaching its male audience were that Turk and JD are more like regular guys who don't take themselves to seriously. Imagine if they had originally cast Channing Tatum and Tyson Beckford to play JD and Turk. Needless to say it would not have worked. So why in the world would they bring on a character like Cole, played by Dave Franco? He's completely full of himself and I can't see many guys liking this character. Dave Franco and his character Cole belong on Grey's Anatomy, not here on Scrubs. The same thing goes for Drew, the old medical student with the leather jacket. He is another "I'm Mr. Cool" type of guy. We all loved Scrubs as we got laugh at or with JD. Both of the new guys are aimed more for a female audience, which makes no sense since it's clear they are going to keep the same type of humor and jokes which caters more to the male audience in general.

It's a tall order to ask any show to try and replace their main characters and keep it rolling. If the interns from season 8 were kept and it was shot at Sacred Heart I think they could have pulled off the transition with flying colors and kept people watching. As a big Scrubs fan, it's really tough to see me maintaining my interest after J.D. and Elliot disappear in a few more episodes which is a shame because it didn't need to be that way. Maybe in these next few episodes these new characters will some how win me and people like me over but I'm not holding my breath. Sorry Scrub fans that are like me, at least we'll always have the first 8 seasons.
