1. Caillou. While this show can be a pill for a parent to swallow with its perfect life. It does teach important lessons to children in a manner that they can relate to and understand. There isn't violence and very little anger ever portrayed. My preschooler loves this show and often asks to watch it again, then later will bring up things he saw on it, wanting to know more about them.
2. Barney. Barney is so creative and imaginative. Each episode is very different from the last but still so insightful. Perhaps a little bit old for my 3 year old this show is geared more towards kids over 5. But there is still enough for him to understand and enjoy. They talk about manners, lessons, shapes, colors and animals to name a few topics.
3. Thomas the Tank Engine. Maybe its partially because my preschooler is a boy and he loves trains. But this show is one we like to make time to watch. Seeing we don't often catch it on tv, Ive bought a few DVDs of it to have around. Teaching manners and lessons in ways that preschoolers can understand. Not to mention all the different types of trains are very fun to watch and then later play with.
4. Sesame Street. Most adults i know remember watching this show when they were children. I know i can. Teaching letters and numbers, even Spanish words. Not to mention it features Elmo who is now one of the most popular toys available. The show is made with creative monster puppets that most children enjoy watching .Even if they cant relate to them, they can relate to the issues that they face.
5. Telletubbies. Though this show is met with resistance from many parents, including my husband. Even he has to admit that our son understands this show better then many things on tv. They show animals which he has learned to identify and talk in a way that a young child can understand.
Not all tv is bad for children. Many shows teach things that they can apply in every day life. Managing the time they watch and the shows they see is the ultimate goal while allowing them to see things that will encourage and expand on their imagination.
