Top 5 Video Gaming Websites

Gaming Websites Offer Forums, Fun and Features

Jillian McCoy
Gaming websites are the average gamer's preferred source for news. As we've moved further away from traditional media like magazines and television (sorry G4!) over the past decade, gaming websites have taken off. These sites feature more than just news, however. There are all sorts of cool things designed to interest your average gamer, from tips and reviews to interviews with gaming industry professionals. If you want to know what's new and fancy in the pixelated world of video games, look no further than the Internet.

If you're interested in getting to know more about gaming, try out one of my favorite sites. These are among the "juggernauts" in the gaming news world, often getting the scoop on leaked information or exclusive first-looks at upcoming games. Each is good for more than just news though, providing awesome entertainment for the controller jockey in all of us.

Kotaku

Among my favorite gaming websites is Kotaku, a popular blog within the Gawker blog network. Kotaku is known for their access to leaked information. Kotaku were first to break news on the black Nintendo Wii's North American release for example, when even Nintendo wouldn't announce the recolored console. In addition to news and leaks, they feature funny viral content like this guy who's clearly very excited about Gears of War 3.

Joystiq

Joystiq is one of the most recognized gaming websites around. Part of AOL's massive news network, its partners include quite a few other gamer-centric blogs like Massively, WoW and Big Download. While those gaming sites focus more tightly on strict topics (Massively centers on MMO gaming, for example), Joystiq takes the high road. This site features news coverage for every major gaming platform, from PC to cell phone. For you audiophiles out there, don't miss out on their weekly podcast.

1UP

This is among the most popular gaming community sites - they claim to be #1! You really can't argue with the level of community found on 1UP. They offer members free blogs, to share their thoughts on gaming and whatever else their pieces of hearts desire. These are a great way to interact with other gamers, and get real-world reviews from fellow consumers - not the jerks who get paid to play video games. Speaking of reviews, 1UP has those too. Plus news, exclusives, contests and lots of other goodies for gamers.

IGN

Perhaps the 800-pound gorilla of gaming websites, IGN is massive. This site is the hub of a gaming network that includes GameSpy and FilePlanet. IGN focuses on more than just games - they also give coverage to other media outlets that are of interest to gamers, such as movies, TV and (gasp!) comics. Guides and codes are available for you cheaters out there, separated by platform. Don't miss out on the "Daily Fix," a series of short news videos hosted by Jessica Chobot. If you don't have much time to soak up the latest news, these quickie videos are the way to go.

Destructoid

Rounding out the list is Destructoid, the only gaming website on the list that's not affiliated with other hugely popular sites. Destructoid does have network partners that would be of interest to gamers, but they're not the "big names." Don't let the 5th place ranking fool you - Destructoid is still very much worth your time. Among the latest at Destructoid is a comparison video showing the changes between the alpha and beta versions of the much-hyped Final Fantasy XIV. Like 1UP, Destructoid offers free blogs for site members, as well as a thriving forum where you can discuss your favorite titles and meet up with other gamers.
