Top 5 Ways for Children to Avoid Dehydration During the Summer Months

LISA
During the summer we are always looking for ways to keep cool. One of our biggest worries is dehydration in our children. In elevated temperatures it doesn't take much for dehydration to become a serious problem.

Below are the top 5 creative way to keep your children hydrated without the summer:

Avoid Prolonged exposure to the sun: It is important to avoid allowing your children to be out for too long in the heat. Taking breaks and creating fun crafts, or projects in the house will keep them safe and hydrated throughout the summer.

Keep cold water readily available- One trick to getting them to drink more water over the summer is to buy mini bottles of water, this will make the water easily accessible and easy to handle. The kids will love having the jug to themselves.

Try making more freeze pops at home- this will allow you to put thinks like pediasure or other drinks containing electrolytes in them without paying an arm and a leg for them. Keep Popsicle and things like juice on hand to assist in their constant hydration.

Monitor pool time and water activities- although water helps in the cooling off process, your child is still exposed to the sun and its rays. Making sure they are getting out periodically will ensure their sun safety and keep them from becoming dehydrated.

Avoid giving them sugary beverages and snacks- sugary beverages while they taste good will aid in dehydration. Making sure that your child is getting water and not too much pop, lemonade, and other sugary substances will keep the safe during the summer.

Staying safe this summer should be a high priority for both you and your family. Teaching your children about signs of dehydration and the importance of re-hydrating yourself will help them be more aware of their surroundings and their own summer safety.
