Top 5 New Years Resolutions for College Students

People celebrate holidays for the oddest reason. There's now even a holiday which celebrates the American flag. Don't we already have days to celebrate our country, like Independence Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and the like? We are even celebrating the fact that a digit in the Gregorian calendar is changing at the end of year, yes, new years. For college students, this means we go home and reunite with out families which have been estranged for the last few months, while you're sitting at home with not much to do, why not resolve to better your self? Here are the top 5 New Years Resolutions for college students.

5. "I will lose my freshmen 7.5." The amount of weight that the average college student gains during their freshmen year is ridiculous. Conventional wisdom states that the average freshmen will gain 15 pounds during their inaugural year, however it often varies from 5-25 pounds. A college student I once knew said, "I have a meal plan, and I'm not afraid to use it." He ended up gaining 18 pounds his freshmen year. The food at college is often very unhealthy, especially when you move straight to the greasy foods, every day. Don't keep letting the weight pile up, hit the gym and turn your freshmen 15 into a freshmen 0!

4. "I'll cut up my credit card." On average, college students are very broke and very bad with money. Most of them have never gone through any personal finance training. The average undergraduate ends up with $3000 in credit card debt and much more in student loans. This year, make the pledge to give up your credit card, because the only thing it does for you is enables you to be more in debt. Just get rid it of it and do your self a favor.

3. "I will attend class." For some students, attending class for 15 hours a week is just too hard, and they find a way to sleep through class, it's amazing how they could be in class for 35 hours a week in high school and be just fine, but now that they're in college, 15 is just too much. You are paying thousands of dollars each semester to go to college, don't let that money go to waste. If your tuition is seven thousand dollars a semester, you are paying $31 for each class period that you go to! Make education a priority, and attend class.

2. "I will pay attention in class." There are another type of college students who regularly attend class, but are in the same boat as those who don't-these are the people who just don't pay attention, and instead play on their laptops all day long, going to their favorite websites and playing solitaire. Pay attention, your professors have some wisdom to impart upon you.

1. "I will prepare for life after college." It's astonishing how often college students go through their classes and graduate, only to realize that their resume is not in order, do not know how to be interviewed, and have nothing but the words B.A. of whatever on their resume. Prepare your self for a job while you are in college, that way when the time to search comes around, you'll be on easy street. Learn something while you are in school, participate in activities, get some experience while in school.
