Aly Adair
What exactly is luck? Do you believe in luck? What is the origin of the word luck? Who made up all those luck phrases like: you lucky dog, lady luck, and luck of the draw?

The concept of luck dates back to the 15th century and comes from the German word gelucke. Everyone would like to have the "luck of the Irish." The definition of luck according to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary is: a force that brings good fortune or adversity. Luck is events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual. Famous Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung, the Father of Analytical Psychology, coined the term "synchronicity", which he describes as "a meaningful coincidence". Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas believed strongly in the relationship of ritual and luck. Asian cultures believe strongly in the relationship of numbers and luck.

So what is the force behind luck? Is it your mind and the power of positive thinking? Is it God? Is it Karma? Is it fate? Is it destiny? Is it the stars and astrology or astronomy? What causes the events or circumstances that bring good or bad luck? Is luck random chance? Is luck based on numbers and ancient numerology? Why do some people seem always seem to have good luck? How do people beat the millions of odds against them in a lottery with one ticket?

No matter what kind of luck you have or where you believe it came from, the concept of luck continues to elude us regardless of our origin, race, religion, gender or the country we call home.
