Top 6 BDSM Songs: Discover the Darker Side of Today's Popular Music

Heather K. Adams
In doing research for other musical articles, I discovered a darker theme to some of the songs I stumbled upon. These songs were decidedly either dominant or submissive in nature, some filled with subtle clues, but most were very blatant in their meaning. Since BDSM seems to be the current popular kink, I decided to use those songs to create my third song list: Top 6 BDSM Songs.

Control - Puddle of Mudd
From the artist that brought us 'She hates me" comes this song full of rage and hurt with definite BDSM undertones. Well, maybe not undertones, as the lyrics do state "I love the way you smack my a**". The song seems to be about a man in an unhealthy BDSM relationship. The beginning talks about how much he loves being locked up in his cage and how he's learning all the rules, but as the song progresses, he sings about how he's faking all the rules and how he hopes to be released from her dirty cage.

Sexy Back - Justin Timberlake
"Dirty babe, you see these shackles, baby, I'm your slave. I'll let you whip me when I misbehave. It's just that no one makes me feel this way." Again, not very hard to decipher the meaning there. The song itself isn't so much about BDSM slavery, but the bridge makes one wonder if this was a ploy for popularity by using the latest fashionable fetish, or if it was a response to former girlfriend Britney Spears' song 'Slave for you'. Either way, it's still worth mentioning on this list.

Bubbly - Colbie Caillat
This song is so sweet and innocent, I almost hated to include it here. However, when compared to the girl-power anthems that are currently dominating the Top 40 (no pun intended), this song is incredibly submissive in nature. Colbie sings about having a man take care of her "You tuck me in just like a child now," and she mentions the control aspect which is so prevalent in the BDSM community. Because of its subtly, you certainly don't have to be involved in BDSM to appreciate this song.

Pain - Three Days Grace
This is another one that may or may not be subtle. It confuses me. He could be talking about physical pain, or he could be talking about emotional pain. It's really up to the listener to bend the lyrics to suit his or her own personal situation. "Pain, without love. Pain, can't get enough. Pain, I like it rough, cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all," could suggest a very masochistic point of view.

Smack That - Akon feat. Eminem
Don't quote me, but this may be the only Top 40 song about spanking. Akon sings in the chorus, "And possibly bend you over, look back and watch me... Smack that, all on the floor. Smack that, give me some more. Smack that, 'til you get sore. Smack that!"

Figured You Out - Nickelback
The meaning of this song was very easy to figure out. When the first verse says "I like your pants around your feet. And I like the dirt that's on your knees. And I like the way you still say please while you're looking up at me," well... that doesn't leave much room for speculation. Despite a couple of rather psychopathic lines tossed in for effect - "While you're passed out on the deck, I love my hands around your neck." - this is a great song with incredibly sexy lyrics.

Just some info regarding Pain by Three Days Grace - apparently the song is about Adam Gontier's addiction (and subsequent recovery from) to Oxycodone, a powerful painkiller he was prescribed after knee surgery. So perhaps masochistic tendencies are there but I don't think they're directly BDSM-like.

I have long wondered why I liked "Bubbly" so much, and your explanation makes a lot of sense. So many "BDSM-themed" songs turn me off because they come off as too hardcore, that they'll appear plain ol' abusive in the eyes of a vanilla audience. "Bubbly" wonderfully encapsulates the spirit of willingly giving someone power over you in a way that's not even necessarily sexual. Oh, so very subtle, but I love your spin on that line.

I liked six. :) I tried not to go with the very obvious songs, Sub.

  • Sub 7/26/2009

Great job, but I guess you should try a top 10.
I'm sure there are many other great songs showing the darker side. The most obvious is Madonna (Erotica).
