Top 6 Humorous Dog Moments

Celebrate National Dog Day with Me

Jill P. Viers
When I sat down to write about a humorous dog story to share in celebration of National Dog Day on August 26, I was met with astounding writer's block. I have witnessed dogs doing so many things that were cute, unique, and humorous that I didn't know where to start.

So I called my husband and asked him, "What's the funniest dog story you can think of?"

And, of course, he was no help. It's just too hard to pick one. So, I decided to briefly share the "Top 6 Humorous Dog Moments" that I have enjoyed over the years.

Top 6 Humorous Dog Moments #1: The Fast Break

Apparently, it's not just humans who are under the impression that, by quickly walking away after breaking wind, it somehow leaves the stink behind without incriminating us. When our hound dog mix, Lilly, was a puppy and was adjusting to a new diet, she quite frequently passed gas...and then she'd leave the room.

My parents came to visit one weekend and we told them about this particular behavior of hers. At one point, my mom turned to my husband and me and said, "In case anyone is wondering why Lilly just left the room, it's because she farted." I think it was one of those stories that someone had to witness before they would believe she really did this. While the sweet little Lilly dog doesn't do this much anymore, it still never ceases to crack me up when she does.

Top 6 Humorous Dog Moments #2: Which Way did he Go?

Lilly likes to watch TV. She doesn't just sit and stare at it; she truly pays attention and recognizes all kinds of things. She barks at dogs, woofs at horses, and jumps up and down when she sees meerkats. While that alone is funny, what's funnier is that when the animals disappear from the screen, Lilly runs over to the side of the TV and looks for them. She thinks they are real and have somehow gotten into our house, so when they leave the TV screen, she assumes they must be nearby. And then she goes to investigate. This is another behavior that always makes me laugh, but it also impresses me that she is able to recognize other animals on the TV.

Top 6 Humorous Dog Moments #3: Sunday Morning Routine

Another Lilly moment involves her sitting on the front porch (photo attached to the article). On the weekends, Lilly and I will go out to enjoy the beautiful weather and sit on the front porch. I sip a cup of coffee; she sits on the step and watches over the neighborhood. It makes me laugh because it makes me feel like we're two old people following our Sunday routine.

Top 6 Humorous Dog Moments #4: I'll be Right Behind You

My dog growing up, a bichon frise named Tiff, loved to go for walks around the neighborhood. As a kid, I had a habit of walking on the curbs when I could instead of walking on the street/sidewalk. One day, I looked back to see that Tiffy was walking behind me on the curb. Of course, it was much more difficult for her given the fact that she had four paws to fit on the curb, but she seemed to manage just fine. After that, she would follow behind me on the curb whenever I walked on it.

Top 6 Humorous Dog Moments #5: Follow that Dog!

Now before you feel sorry for Tiffy because I dressed her up in my play clothes and a bonnet and pushed her around the neighborhood in a stroller, you have to understand how much she liked it! Some of my favorite childhood memories were of pushing her around in that stroller. My neighbors always assumed I was babysitting or something, so they'd come up to us to look at the "baby." They were in for quite a surprise when they were met with this wide-eyed, little white fur ball wearing a bonnet.

Top 6 Humorous Dog Moments #6: Death Becomes Her

When I was in college, I worked for a branch of the Small Business Administration. I worked with wonderful people. One day, the boss came in and asked if I could house sit while her family was away. She had two cats and one dog.

I was happy to do it. At the time, I was working out a lot and I was in great shape. I asked if they wanted me to take the dog for walks; they said they'd really appreciate it if I did. I assumed they took the on walks and that she would love to go running. She certainly did.

I got dragged down the hill. We stopped running and just walked because I was afraid I would end up face planting hard into the cement because she weighed so much and ran so fast.

Even though we'd quit running early on, the effects lasted much longer than I expected. The dog wheezed, like it was about ready to hyperventilate, pass out, and/or die, for hours. I was terrified. I thought I was going to have to explain to my boss how and why I had killed her dog. But the whole time, the dog was still so happy that she'd gotten to go for a run outdoors that she just sat there with a smile on her face. Even with the wheezing and near-death experience, she was happy as can be.

When her breathing finally calmed down a few hours later, she happily slept on the couch with me, or rather, she sprawled out on top of my shins. This was a dog that weighed at least 80-100 pounds, so this whole sleeping on my legs thing really hurt. She was too lovable to push away, though...and I was just grateful that I hadn't sent her to an early grave.

As you can tell, dogs have made lasting impressions in my life. They have provided some of my fondest memories. I will never forget the memories or the dogs themselves. Happy National Dog Day!
