Top 7 Interviewing Points to Land the Job

Richard Banks
A first impression is your one and only time to "WOW" your potential employer. Whether you have recently graduated from college or looking at changing careers, the first step is the interview process. An interview is your opportunity to set yourself apart from other potential candidates. Follow this seven step process to "WOW" your potential employer and land that job.

The Big Picture

What is the big picture? These are company goals and missions of the organization. You must know what the company is striving to accomplish in order to be a productive member of the organization. For example, if you are applying to be an associate at Walmart, then you should know there modus operandi is to have customers save money so they can live better lives. Spend time visiting corporate websites to get the ins and outs of the organization.

Know the Boss

You can call a prospective company and invite the leader to lunch to learn more about the leader of the company. This may work in certain situations, but is not business savvy for all prospective employees. Understanding leaders' expectations is vital to understanding the organization itself. A leader is going to carry on the brand image of the entire organization, and thus understanding him/her will assist you in understanding the company.

Creative Thinking

Businesses today want employees with potential, someone who can add the most to the business and also grow their respective career. Interview questions generally follow the same guidelines, the difference is in your delivery. As you are answering, state examples of ways you have thought "outside of the box".

Confidence

Do not confuse confidence with conceit. Being conceited gives employers a sense of someone who will be unmanageable. Someone who knows the role and responsibilities of a CEO while only applying for an entry level position is not the ideal employee. Instead of conceit, try assertion.

Humility

During the interview, you want to "WOW" your potential employer. Remember this is not only a time to explain all the best parts of your career, but times where you credited others for their accomplishments. Being humble lets the employer know you will have a compassionate side without being too passive.

Listening Skills

Speaking too hastily causes the illusion of making questionable judgment calls. Listen to the questions intently and take time to answer questions. At times an employer will give you the answers they are looking for, if you listen. This is like having an open book test. Listening will also show your ability to demonstrate control.

Positivity

In business as in life, things don't always go our way. During the interview is not the time to blend negative and positive aspects. Stay upbeat and positive throughout the length of the interview. Positivity plays a key role especially in organizations seeking to improve employee morale.

An interview is your time to stand apart from the hundreds if not thousands of other potential applicants. Will you land the job or will you move on to the next interview?
