Top 80's Halloween Movies for School Age Kids

Maggie Taylor-Mount
Relive the past and share a Halloween movie with the kids from the 1980's. There are ghosts, gremlins, and psychic powers all available on Netflix or Blockbuster for rent.

1. Lost Boys

The classic 80's vampire movie brings back memories of the 80's heartthrobs starring as vampires and vampire hunters. After a town is taken over by vampires, young boys attempt to stop them in a plot only thought of by teenagers.

2. Ghostbusters

Three scientists take up as ghost busters who vow to remove the ghosts from NYC. The most memorable ghost award goes to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, in giant size.

3. Gremlins

Don't expose them to direct sunlight, touch them with water, and whatever you do, don't feed them after midnight! Seems simple, right? This movie is what happens when people cannot follow even the most basic of instructions.

4. Dead Zone

The Dead Zone is a movie version of the Stephen King classic by the same name. A man wakes from a coma to discover that he has psychic abilities and foresees a cataclysmic event in the near future. Can he prevent it?

5. Beetlejuice

A recently deceased couple is returned to their vacation home and discovers it is now inhabited by a family of New Yorkers. They decide to haunt the family so they can spend their afterlife in peace. Completely ineffectual as ghosts, they call upon Beetlejuice to help them with their quest and hilarity ensues.

6. The Shining

This 80's Stanley Kubric film centers on a writer and his family caretaking a deserted hotel for the winter. The Shining is a cult classic and the origins of the word 'redrum'. This movie is better suited for older kids as it can be quite scary.

7. Poltergeist

Young Carol Ann is the victim of a poltergeist in this 80's classic with the same name. A generation of Americans gained a healthy fear of clowns thanks to this movie so it is probably best for older kids.

8. Teen Wolf
As if high school isn't hard enough, but Michael J. Fox's character wakes up one morning to discover he is a werewolf. The usual teen angst and werewolf stereotypes can all be found in this light classic.

9. Little Shop of Horrors

The 80's film starring Rick Moranis is actually a remake of the 60s cult classic turned Broadway musical, Little Shop of Horrors. A giant man-eating plant with the taste for blood simultaneously demands human food and helps a geeky plant guy with his love life.

10. Goonies
A group of misfit boys search out pirate treasure and end up in an adventure they never forget. This is a great movie about adolescent friendship and tolerance.
