Top Action Adventure Television Shows in 2008

Bill Frische
Let us all be honest. The major network television shows are not what they were when we were younger. Maybe we were more immature. Maybe we had lower standards. But for the most part, we now find sex based jokes and canned laugh tracks boring. Until the premier season of Heroes, I had given up on television as hopelessly inane. But once that first season was over, I began looking at a few other shows. Here are my top picks for 2008.

Heroes: The first season was fantastic and it lost a little bit in the 2007 season. I attribute that to the writers strike in 2007. Now that the 2008 season has begun, the show is back on track with new heroes, powers, and - most importantly, storylines. Check out http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/ for show times and you can also watch this show online.

Chuck: Anyone who has been to mega-super electronics store will get the Nerd Herd right away. Comically funny without the sex jokes, Chuck is a show about a ordinary guy who inadvertantly got entangled in the world of spies and intrigue.

Life: One would think a show about a guy who spends twelve years in prison and then gets set free would be a little dark. And this show has its darker moments. Charles Crews is a homicide detective with a Zen bent that gets him though the day. After hours he works at getting catching the person who put him in prison. This is a great show with great writing.

My Own Worst Enemy: I had thought Christian Slater dropped off the planet. But he is back and he stars in My Own Worst Enemy. This is another spy show, but it is not a comedy. The main character, Edward has a created alias personality that lived out an ordinary life. Edward comes out for the spy games. The ordinary personality is not supposed to know about Edward, but something went wrong and they now are both trying to stay alive and communicate via video messages. It is an interesting and unique concept.

Sanctuary: This new show is on the SCI FI network, but each week is also online so if you do not have cable you can still catch the show. It stars Amanda Tapping (of Stargate SG1 fame) as Dr. Helen Magnus, a near immortal who is runs a scientific Sanctuary that helps, discovers, and catalogs other abnormals like herself. This show was created and is directed by the same people who create the Star Gate series, so if you like Stargate, you will like Sanctuary.
