Natural Ways to Combat Ageing Without Turning to Cosmetic Surgery

Carole Anne Somerville
None of us are getting any younger and whereby some will turn to cosmetic surgery to help hide the signs of ageing, others may prefer more natural methods. Ageing may well be inevitable but there are ways to help slow down this process. The key to keeping a youthful appearance is to understand what it is that might cause facial and other aging and to work out how to combat this.

There are a number of habits you might think about for instance that could be causing your skin to age rapidly. Cigarette smoke increases wrinkles and causes dry skin. Too much sun can give the skin a leathery appearance as well as increase wrinkles. Alcohol, an unhealthy diet, too much inactivity and stress can all cause premature ageing, not just in the skin but in other areas of the body like your joints, immune system, heart and brain too.

To take care of your skin, here's what to do: Always use sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays during the summer and when out in the sun. Use a good moisturizer during the winter when your skin might be exposed to freezing temperatures and bitterly cold winds. Indoor heating can also cause the skin to dry which is why moisturizer should be used to provide daily hydration each and every day.

Exercise regularly: Regular exercise can help keep your appearance young because not only does it get the blood flowing but exercise will also tone up your muscles and helps prevent high blood pressure. Exercise also encourages a feeling of well-being and helps to boost your spirits.

Exercise your Brain: Not just your body but your brain can benefit through regular exercise like writing, poetry, learning a language, surfing the internet, crosswords and puzzles. As well as staying young in body, stay young in mind by keeping those brain cells working regularly!

To keep young in appearance, if you are overweight, think about losing weight and lose it nice and slow. Extreme dieting can cause a sudden loss of volume which in turn might age the face and make you look drawn and haggard. To avoid this kind of ageing, be sure to include all the protein, vitamins and nutrients in your diet that your body needs to stay healthy. Losing weight is rejuvenating and as well as giving your health and energy a boost, just think of all the great new clothes you can add to your wardrobe!

Aim for a Good Night's Sleep: Poor sleep can make you irritable and moody. You will grow tired more easily and might feel as if you're 'getting old!' A good night's sleep will help recharge your batteries, leaving you feeling physically more energetic, mentally more alert and emotionally more relaxed.

Aim to eat healthily and this means including at least five portions of fruit and vegetables in your daily diet. You should also be moderate about your intake of salt and sugar. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Try to stay young in attitude. Do fun things: dance, take up a new hobby, visit new places and get involved in group activities. Reverse the ageing process by keeping young at heart!

The more you incorporate anti-ageing strategies into your life, the easier you will find it to get into the regular habit of following activities that will help prevent or slow down the usual signs of ageing.
