Top Asian Free MMOs

Rose Online
Official Website: roseonlinegame.com
Rose Online, produced by the same people behind hit MMO Ragnarok Online, is really a fun game to play. It is the prototypical Asian MMORPG, with anime cutness written all over it. The characters resemble adolescent adventurers, complete with massive eyes, cutesey hairstyles, and absurdly large weapons. Animal monsters and NPCs are your typical bunch of MMO monsters with an anime twist that sometimes border on the ridiculous like the Giant Jelly Bean King. The game doesn't take itself too seriously, but you will still find a dedicated player group roaming the world of Rose Online. At higher levels, intense PvP based on a battlegrounds-style model predominates. However, at lower levels, (actually, for the vast majority of the game), players in Rose Online will spend their time leveling up by doing quests (often linked together and quite long), and grinding against monsters. I have enjoyed playing Rose Online as a light distraction, mostly because several of my friends got involved in it, playing it heavily. We all partied together and had a blast exploring this anime-fantasy land of Rose Online. Try it for free, although there is a pay-to-use item mall with speciality items.

Maple Story
Official Website: maplestory.nexon.net
Maple Story has been around for quite some time and people either love it or hate it. Unlike most freebie MMOs, Maple Story is set in 2d, sidescroller world, similar to old school Mario games. It is a bizarre concept, but not quite that weird once you start playing it. Basically, side-scrolling maps and zones replace the 3d maps found in games like World of Warcraft, Everquest or Ashen Empires. There is a heavy grind in Maple Story, but players who persist through this will often stick with the game for a long time. It's free to download and play, although the obligatory pay item mall (for real money) is an option as well.

Dungeon Fighter Online
Official Website: dungeonfighter.nexon.net
Can't get enough of the 2d MMO craze? Need something 2d but a little different from Maple Story? Try Dungeon Fighter Online, another cool 2d MMO for free. However, unlike Maple Story, it has a more side-scroller, beat 'em up, "Streets of Rage" style gameplay. There is six different character classes to choose from, ranging from Gunners to Slayers to Priests and Thieves. Definitely worth checking out if you need some fast-paced, action MMO style gameplay. Dungeon Fighter Online is run by Nexon, creators of several other popular MMORPgs.
