Top Baby Names for Boys and Girls in 2010

Lisa Stevens
Name Lab Released their list of the top 10 baby names for 2010 based on a list of the most popular names in the Social Security Administration Statistics. Expectant parents have for years followed the trend of baby names, and many baby's grow up to realize a lot of people around them have the same name. Many parents like unusual baby names to make their child stand out from the crowd. Many others tend to pick a name that represents their family or a particular family member, such as a Grandparent, and many parents like to follow the trends of celebrity baby names.

The list for 2010 though shows a great divide with names that have continued to dominate the top spot for years, like Emma, and the name Jayden, made famous by Will Smith and Britney Spears, falling out of the top 10 into the 11th position. Here are the top ten list of baby names for boys and girls in 2010, with their placement from 2009 next to them.

Last years number one name Aiden fell off the charts this year to the number sixteen position. Many parents surveyed with a son named Aiden said they picked the name from the Sex and the City series. With the release of Sex and the City 2 this summer this name might make a come back in 2011.

Michael and Joshua are just two of the names that made the biggest jump of the year, going from the number eighteen and twenty spots to the number two and four most popular names of the year. Michael has always been a popular name, my husband is named Michael as is 3 husbands of family members. This name should stay in the top 10 for at least a few more years as it flip flops between popular and not so popular.

The girl's list saw some major changes this year as well with once popular name Addison dropping off the list to number sixteen and Chloe sliding down from number eight to the number ten spot. Former top of the charts name Emma takes the top spot back this year from Isabella which slides down to number two.

Baby names should always be a personal choice for every parent, but it is always interesting to see the trends of popular baby names as they change from year to year.
