And that's the beauty of music by the Beatles. You'll find a song that speaks to wherever you are in life, whatever you are doing/not doing, and whomever you are with. The diversity is what makes the group's music as a whole easy to relate to. We can all identify with something in ONE of them.
Each song has its season, so to speak. The Long and Winding Road reminds me of a friend in the military whom I've loved and been friends with for a decade now. We dated, then went our separate ways for crazy reasons, both building lives. Still, when something happens, that long and winding road leads me back to his door, metaphorically. We fill each other in on what has been happening because that road is very familiar. Who here can't relate to that?
Nowhere Man? Each of us has felt isolated at one time or another. I am a loner, and was painfully shy growing up. "Nowhere Man, please listen. You don't know what you're missing." That's every child (or adult) who has stood on the sidelines of life as he's yearned to get the willpower to jump in and take over.
The confused teenage years? Well, Help, of course! Funny but that song seems to repeat its life lessons over and over as the years march on. "Help, I need somebody. Not just anybodyHelp." Don't we all? I loved that song as a teen, then as a new parent wondering if I would survive a child who wouldn't sleep through the night and then later a divorce. So many seasons covered for such a simple song, eh?
The shy days gave away to hippie days and the "Battle of John and Yoko." Lived through the news reports. Always picture the two of them sitting in bed, holding court for the media. I've never figured out why that was considered so odd or Lennon was considered such an outlaw when so many real outlaws put on suits and ties and roam around on Wall Street every day. That's one season that hasn't passed for me.
Green Onion? Octopus' Garden and Come Together? Great songs to examine the lines in your hand by. Hippie or not, I loved the songs, but never got the concepts. Maybe I needed to look at the black light posters on my cousin's wall more closely because he seemed to understand the nuances of those songs. Yeah, it was the black light posters and/or the lava lamp.
Wildly in Love? How about the very innocent, "I Only Want to Dance with You" or the more Idealistic, "Can't Buy Me Love." I'm still waiting for that person who will sing (or at least play) "Something" just for me. I may have found him, but not sure if he'll do the song yet. The Beatles love songs are certainly innocent, but isn't new love? Now that's a beautiful season.
Broken Love? "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party so I'll Go." "No Reply."
Idealistic and want to change the world? "Revolution", hands down. I don't think anything will top that one to express my political views.
Grown up with a first job? "Tax Man" sure hit the spot. I know I took a double and triple take at my first real paychecks. "Move too slow and I'll tax your feet, 'cause I'm the taxman." Again, timeless. If you were ever a fan of the Beatles, that song pops into your head every April as you are struggling to fill out those *&!%^! forms.
"Let it Be." What a song for the country at so many times over the last five decades. No matter what horrid thing has transpired, there comes a point we all just say "Let it Be." Amen.
So, choose a favorite Beatles song? As (Sir) Paul McCartney would say in his best brogue, "Are you daft, man?"

Post a CommentChris, thank you for your comment!! Yes, in really bad times, and even not so bad times, we really do get by with a little help from our friends. And the Joe Cocker version is awesome as well. Again, music really speaks to you in so many different ways during your life, doesn't it?
My favorite has always been "With A Little Help From My Friends," even before I knew what they were talking about. Now, 23, it's all the more relevant. Maybe it's because of that Joe Cocker cover from the Wonder Years... Anyway, I get by.
My favorites (in no particular order): Rain, Think for Yourself, The Word, Come Together, Get Back, Day Tripper, We Can Work It Out, Norwegian Wood, While My Guitar Gently Weeps. No rock group is better for quantity plus quality.
Exactly, Johnny! Music is very reflective of my mood. On Fridays, at 4:30, the women in my office have me blare Tom Jones, for example. LOL. Music has gotten me through the worst times in my life, and it has also made the great times even better. Thanks for your comment.
True. I have many different favorite Beatles songs... depending on my mood. When it comes down to it I could never *really* choose just one. Or even just 10 or 20.
