Snake river, Idaho: This beautiful place is one hour south of Boise. Located in the Snake River birds of prey conservation area. It has the densest concentration of raptor birds that hunt other animals for food. Area vultures, eagle, hawks, falcons and owls nest in the canyon walls. They hunt the grounds for squirrels and rabbits. The birds nest from March to June and in May the parents continually hunt to bring home meals to the babies. It is a great idea to begin your trip in Boise at the world center for birds on prey. It is an international organization that raises birds in captivity and releases them to the wild. They will provide you with a visitor's guide and a map to the canyon. For advice on current sightings, it is recommended to stop in at the visitors center in Kuna dedication point. It is about fifteen miles outside of town. It is a stunning spot and many people visiting have reported seeing golden eagles, prairie falcons and red-tailed hawks.
Rockport-Fulton, Texas: This area is legendary for migrating songbirds. When a cold front sweeps in from the north, birds come in seeking refuge from the weather. They're easy to identify by their bright breeding plumage. The Texas coastal bend is best known for the Arkansas national wildlife refuge. It is the winter home of the endangered whooping cranes. It is highly recommended to stop into the Rockport-Fulton chamber of commerce for maps to the Texas birding trail and tips on the hottest birdwatching spots. In Rockport you can take a boat out to the rookery islands to view nesting shorebirds and colonial water birds. You may also spot some egrets, terns and herons.
Cape May, New Jersey: This great resort town is known for its quaint Victorian-era hotels, seaside motels, fine dining restaurants, and great places for birdwatchers. People travel year round to the southern tip of New Jersey to watch birds. It is recommended that anyone coming here to birdwatch should first stop in at the Cape May bird observatory. This center offers guided bird walks, workshops and lessons for beginner birdwatchers. You can also hike the trails at the Higbee beach wildlife management area. Woods, grasslands, fields and mudflats are a regular stop for vireos, orioles, tanagers, thrushes and other songbirds from the Delaware bay.
