Top Books for Preschoolers: From Pinduli to Before You Were Born

Niki
Reading to young children is so very important in developing their language skills. I started reading to my daughter when she was only a few days old. She is now 4 years old, and I continue to read to her every night. Here is a list of wonderful books for preschool aged children.

1. Stellaluna by Janell Cannon: A story about a young fruit bat who is seperated from her mother by an owl attack. A mama bird lets Stellaluna stay in her nest with her babies. This book has a wonderful message about accepting differences in others. The beautiful illustrations will keep both you and your child engaged in this wonderful book.

2. The Way I Feel by Janan Cain: This story explores a variety of different emotions, jealous, excited, happy, angry, shy and more. Reading this book to your child teaches them to recognize their emotions and lets them know it is normal to feel this way sometimes. Rhyming context and fun, colorful illustrations will surely make this book one of your preschoolers favorites!

3. Pinduli: Another wonderful book by Janell Cannon! This story is about a little hyena named Pinduli who wonders off away from her mother and comes across a pack of wild dogs, a lion, zebras, other animals that make fun of Pindulis' appearance. Pinduli teaches them a lesson and they all realize it's not nice to make fun of others and to accept everyone's differences. Another beautiful illustrated book that will captivate all ages.

4.Before You Were Born by Michael and Kelly Molinet: Mommy and daddy prepare for the birth of their baby. This book send children a message letting them know they were loved by their parents and by God before they were even born.

5. The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle: A book list for children would not be complete without a book by Eric Carle! In this story a cricket is born but can not make any noise. He meets several other bugs through out his day but whenever he rubs his legs together no sound is made. Finally, little cricket learns to chirp. This book is special because at the very end of the book an electric chirping sensor which is activated on the last page and makes a real cricket chirping noise! All preschoolers will love this book and ask to read it again, and again.

We adore Before You Were Born, although admittedly, it wasn't until my daughter actually had been born that I could appreciate it. Nicely written!
