Top Chef Season 8 Episode 2 - Night at the Museum Recap
Top Chef All Stars Are Cooking for Kids, as They Continue to Battle it Out for the Title of Next Top Chef!
This week's Top Chef quick fire began with the introduction of teenage heart throb Joe Jonas. Joe challenged the chefs to create a midnight snack suitable for a bunch of youngsters who were staying the night at the museum of Natural History. After the Top Chef contestants had concocted a variety of high sugar treats and finger food munchies Joe Jonas decided two of the Chef's had done a great job. However, Joe couldn't decide who the winner was Tiffani F. or Spike. Then the Chef's were broken into two groups. Dale did a great job describing the teams as the Spice Girls and their body Guard Dale, vs. the Cool Guys and their mom, Carla.
These groups would help Tiffani F. and Spike to create enough quick fire dishes to feed the hoard of hungry children. Tiffani's dish was chocolate moon pies, and their team was blue. Spike and team red were making potato and veggie chips. When Padma and Joe came out the kids went wild and Joe and the kids unanimously chose Tiffani and the Blue teams Chocolate Moon Pies as the winner.
Top Chef 8 Episode 2 Elimination
Just when the Chefs think it is time to escape the museum. Tom shows up, with a Top Chef Elimination challenge twist. Their elimination challenge is that they have to cook breakfast for the kids and their parental units at 7:00am! They won't have time to leave the museum so they are provided with cots, and the teams stay the same for breakfast. As if this wasn't hard enough, the chef teams both have to cook with a different restriction. Team T-Rex, can cook with meat and animal byproducts only. The other team, Brontosaurus, can only cook with food that is grown. Because Tiffani won the quick fire she gets to decide which restriction they will be under and she chooses T-Rex.
Some Chefs go right to sleep others explore the museum, in the morning, though they all must cook. Soon team T-Rex realizes that they don't have any herbs or anything to go with the meat and become a little concerned. They have broken up into pairs to work on dishes and just after getting started Jaime slices her finger. She is advised to go to get stitches, and leaves Jen to work on their dish alone. The other cheftestants feel that this is a cop out, especially Fabio who broke his finger the first time he was on Top Chef. Just before service started Jaime returned with only three stitches!
Team Brontosaurus didn't have a picnic either on this challenge Spike stirred Fabio's gnocchi the wrong way, Dale's polenta cake winds up just polenta, and Marcel loses his cool when Angelo has Carla cut his plums.
Judges Table
One of the most explosive Top Chef judges tables ever, the winning team was team brontosaurus. The winning dish was Richard, Angelo and Marchel with the Banana Pudding. Fabio almost won with his gnocci, even though gnocchi isn't usually a breakfast food.
Team T-Rex, was then called to judges table to find out which of their team members was going to wind up extinct. Despite Tiffani F.'s pleas that she misunderstood that they wouldn't have both meat and veg, the judges were unsympathetic. In a challenge that was about adaptability, team T-rex failed to adapt. Tre's over salty shrimp sauce was a problem; the uneven cooking of all the frittatas was also an issue.
Soon the fight began though. Tom said Jen's egg was bland, Jen told him off saying it was salty, smoky, and flavorful. To which Tom declared they would just have to agree to disagree. Jen exclaimed she would fight to the death on it, and that the judges were wrong. After Tom inquired why they didn't plate things separately, Jen told him, "You are the judges if you wanted separate plates, you should've been smart enough to ask for them." Tom told the judges he didn't care if Jen was going to be mouthy that he was going to send people home for bad dishes but not bad attitude.
Jen despite her fight, it was unfortunately to the death and Jen was asked to pack her knives and go. The entire group of Top Chef All Stars was shocked. Jen said her dad says second place is still losing so I wonder what he will say about being second to last.
