Top Cleaning Tricks to Make Your Appliances Last

Most people have appliances in their home, but they don't consider what they may need to do so that appliances last longer. In the long run, this saves families money.

In order to keep your refrigerator in tiptop shape, the compressor coils should be cleaned every three to six months. They can be cleaned by dusting underneath and behind the fridge. Dust will cause the refrigerator to overheat, thus making it work harder. Clean door gaskets with soapy water.

To ensure your dryer remains in good condition, the dryer filter needs to be thoroughly cleaned in between each load. It is a good habit to be in for family members to clean it either when taking clothes out or putting clothes in. Dryer ducts need to be cleaned one time per year.

To keep your washer working well, make sure the machine is 100 percent level. Avoid overloading it, so make sure you have a clear understanding of what your washer's true capacity is. Also, make sure you understand how much soap you can safely put in your washer and that you are using the proper soap. If using a front loader washer, it is important to use HE soap. Look for the soap containers marked "HE" somewhere on the packaging. HE machines also take less soap, so don't over-soap your machine!

It is important to keep your stove (and all appliances) clean, this includes your refrigerator. If your electric stove has an element, keep it clean. It is also important to keep drip pans clean. This can be done with regular cleanings or by coating them with tinfoil and changing the foil out occasionally. If the oven is self cleaning, run this cycle once every six months or so or clean the oven by hand.

Replace your furnace filters on a bi-monthly basis during the winter months or the months that you are using the furnace. Avoid replacing in the summer if your furnace fan does not run during this time.

Other tips are to make sure to clean not only in appliances, but around the outside, including cabinets, floors and countertops. It is important for these items to remain clean in order to stay in good working condition. Move appliances out at least once a year that can be moved, such as refrigerators, stoves and washers and dryers. Thoroughly clean the floor underneath with a mixture of vinegar and water (if cleaning a hard surface floor). Keep an opened box of baking soda in the refrigerator to ensure no bad food smells can be found inside. Be sure to frequently change the baking soda box out, throwing the old box away.
