Top Contenders for the 2010 Kentucky Derby

When the 2010 Kentucky Derby kicks off on the first Saturday in May, it will mark the 136th time this prestigious event has captured the interest of the nation.

The Kentucky Derby, dubbed the most exciting two minutes in sports promises, is loaded with talented thoroughbred horses who have the chance to win the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Here are a few of the top contenders for the 2010 Kentucky Derby in no particular order.

Eskendereya

When this horse, trained by Todd Pletcher, earned a first place finish during the Wood Memorial, it became an immediate co-favorite to come away with a victory at Churchill Downs. Owner Zayat Stables will be looking for Eskendereya to extend the win streak to three at the Kentucky Derby.

Lookin At Lucky

Though the horse faltered with a third place finish at the Santa Anita Derby, trainer Bob Baffert is eager to prove it was only a minor setback in their preparation for the Kentucky Derby.

Jackson Bend

Owner Robert LaPenta and trainer Nick Zito are hoping to break the trend of recent second place finishes with a victory at Chuchill Downs. Jackson Bend was edged out at the Wood Memorial by Kentucky Derby favorite Eskendereya.

Ice Box

The second horse owned by Robert LaPenta earned its way into the Kentucky Derby with a first place finish at the Florida Derby. Trainer Zito will have his plate full keeping these two horses on track for the first leg in the Triple Crown of racing.

Endorsement

This horse earned a trip to the 2010 Kentucky Derby when it came away with a first place finish at the Sunland Derby in March. Trainer Shannon Ritter will be eager to follow up the biggest win of her career with a solid showing at the Kentucky Derby.

Conveyance

Over the last four months, this horse has been on fire, earning 2 first place finishes and most recently a second place finish at the Sunland Derby to Endorsement. Trainer Baffert will be adding to his impressive career in the world of horse racing if Conveyance can come away with a Derby victory.
