Top Eight Cult Classic Musical Movies

Even if we are not willing to admit it we all love a musical now and then. Musicals can be romantic, or they can be fun and crazy. We sing along, we memorize the songs and we become fans of the interesting characters. Musicals are more than just a movie, they are movies with spark. Chose any (or all) of the following movies for a fun night of singing and dancing.

In 2008 a new musical hit the racks and it became a cult classic that very moment. "Repo! The Genetic Opera" stars "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" alumni Anthony Head as the Repo Man, who repossesses the organs that have not been paid for. This movie melds sci-fi and horror with comedy and the beauty of music.

The classic John Waters flick "Hairspray" was recently remade, but the new version does not compare at all to the original 1988 release. Ricki Lake stars as a rotund teenage girl who would do anything to get on a 1960's TV dance show. Music and puppy love ensue. You will be dancing along with her!

In 1990 Waters returned with a gorgeous Johnny Depp in "Cry-baby." Cult classic loved by girls and movie hounds, mostly, this film showed us that tough guys have feelings too. Ricki Lake came back for another Waters film, and this one also cast Iggy Pop, Amy Locane and Traci Lords.

"Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog" was a 3 episode TV series that has found it's cult status and popularity on DVD. This 2008 flick tells the tale of Dr. Horrible (played by Neil Patrick Harris) who fall sin love with a girl names Penny who is then stolen away by his arch-nemesis Captain Hammer (played by Nathan Fillion). The songs are great and Nathan Fillion steals the show!

"Grease" can not be left off of any best musical list. Starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta as star-crossed lovers, the music is sure to win you over even if the story doesn't. "You're the One that I Want" and "Greased Lightnin" are sure to stick in your head for days.

The 1986 remake of Roger Corman's "Little Shop of Horrors" surpassed it's original with the witty and corny acting of Rick Moranis as Seymour. Who doesn't love a large man eating plant? "Feed me, Seymour!"

Johnny Depp brought his singing chops to the big screen again in 2007 as Sweeney Todd in "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." This film truly blended the musical genre of movies with that of horror flicks. This film was fantastically directed by Tim Burton and also stared the beautiful, yet creepy, Helena Bonham Carter.

The best, in my opinion, musical cult classic movie of all time is "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." each year people gather at theaters dressed as their favorite characters to watch midnight showings of this tale of alien beings from another planet. It stars Tim Curry as a transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who creates his own Frankenstein's monster, or hot man in this case. "Time Warp" is the best song ever.
