While it may be difficult to explain at first, a computer with an internet connection and Skype can be an amazing thing for a senior. Skype can allow them to call friends and family around the world at little or no cost. The video chat functionality can allow them to "see" grandchildren, new homes, or other things that they otherwise wouldn't be able to.
While it may seem like a gaming system for youngsters, many seniors are also getting into gaming using the Nintendo Wii. The Wii can help seniors get up and move from the comfort of their own living room. Games such as Wii Fit have been used in some nursing homes, and are fun for seniors as well as for children when they come visit.
Elderly, especially those who are confined to home will love the Amazon Kindle. The Kindle can hold literally over a thousand books, allowing seniors to carry around quite a few options with them wherever they go. The Kindle is also connected to a 3G network which allows it to download new books in less than 60 seconds. Those who might need a ride to the library or bookstore will appreciate the ability to instantly get the books they want, without having to get help. The Kindle also has paper-like pages making it easier to read than some other devices such as the iPad.
If you have an elderly loved one who often loses track of where they are, track your their location with the Gemtek PT400 tracker. The tracker has a built-in GPS that allows you to pinpoint its location by logging onto a website, or by calling a number. The tracker also has an SIS feature which allows the user to press one button and instantly dial a pre-set number. You can program that number to be your number, a nursing homes number, or even 911.
Scanning some old pictures (or gathering together some digital ones) and putting them on a digital picture frame can be a great gift for a senior. Digital picture frames can hold and enormous amount of photos, and can be periodically changed out with new pictures at no additional cost.
